Sony CEO thinking over Ericsson joint venture: report

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Sony's (6758.T) joint venture with cell phone maker Ericsson (ERICb.ST) must do better, Sony's chief executive was quoted as saying by a German newspaper on Wednesday.

Asked whether Sony is planning to end its Sony Ericsson joint venture, Howard Stringer told Die Welt: "It's certainly been a difficult year but buying out a partner is never an easy thing."

Sony lowered its group net profit forecast for the year to March by 17 percent, citing a slump at Sony Ericsson and weakening prospects for its electronics division amid tough price competition.

"We have to work together again as we did two years ago. Or the joint venture will have to find its own solution," Stringer said.

He added that it was hard for a company to be as nimble as possible when it works in a joint venture.

"You're always engaged in discussion and negotiation. We and Ericsson are always discussing ways of making Sony Ericsson as successful as it possibly can be," he said.

Yahh, Sony nuntut SE bisa sukses seperti tahun2 kemarin, klo kaga SE bisa bubar, yah sama sih, gw juga mikir gitu, klo produknya kaya tahun kemarin2 memang payah.

padahal kayak W 910 dan W 980 ok loh.
P1i dan akhir2 ini seperti G900, juga sudah ok.

G900 sebelum dirilis penuh dengam berita negatif, ternyata setelah dirilis, banyak brg kosong.

Melanjutkan tradisi sebelumnya, terutama dalam 2 tahun terakhir ini, Sony Ericsson kembali menambahkan varian warna baru untuk beberapa handphone-nya yang sudah dirilis. Di antaranya adalah untuk K770, W980, W910, dan W350.

Dengan penambahan 4 varian warna baru, K770 menjadi handphone Sony Ericsson dengan pilihan warna terbanyak, yaitu 9 pilihan warna.

Rata2 produk keluaran tahun 2008 ini uda bagus banget kok, yg payah tuh 2007 dan mulai pertengahan 2006, kayanya K800 itu best phone terakhir dari SE deh seblm 2008 ini, itupun ada jeleknya dikit, video recordernya antique.

Artikel dangkal yg rada ambigu, bisa salah tafsir kalo baca sekali doang. Stringer bilang We have to work together again as we did two years ago, coba temen2 inget apa yg SE lakuin 2 taon lalu.

Yap! Sony ngebagi brand Cyber-shot sama SE 2 taon lalu (Walkman dikasih setaon sebelomnya). Dan hasilnya......... Walkman dan Cyber-shot phone bener2 ngangkat sales SE. Soal kualitas (Walkman/Cyber-shot beneran-kayak W800,810,900,K800,810- atopun for branding sake-W200,K550-) itu soal laen, yg pentng jualan laku, yg beli banyak. Nah, klo sale-nya booming, SE dapet profit gede dong. Klo profitnya gede, jelas Sony sama Ericsson dapet dividen gede juga. Gw rasa Sony gak bakal "mutusin" Ericsson gitu aja. Coba bayangin deh, klo SE bener2 dimampusin sama Sony, trus perangkat home/audio/laptop Sony yg support DLNA siapa yg beli?? LG dan Samsung juga bikin piranti yg support DLNA, dan hape2 yg bakal mereka rilis juga dikasih fitur ini (INNOV8 got it). Ini yg gw sebut strategi "loe beli barang ini, supaya lebih keren beli yg ini juga". Konsumen akhirnya terdorong beli hape dan piranti laen (laptop misalnya) yg sama2 support DLNA. Okay, get over the DLNA thingy.

Gw seh nangkepnya, si Stringer pengen ngulangin sukses 2 taon lalu. Caranya? Dia udah bisa mbaca pikiran the average Joe and Jane (pembeli awam, bukan kaum FP!). Mereka kan rata2 mikirnya "Wow, hape ini ada label Walkman, musiknya pasti nendang neh, beli ah", "Wow, Cyber-shot phone, jepretannya pasti keren, beli ah", etc. Bagi orang awam kayak gitu, label/branding itu sangat decisive lho. Coba perhatiin di sekitar temen2, sebagian besar user SE pake hape apa sih? Klo temen2 gw yg make SE, mayoritas sih seri W.

Hmmm..... Dick Komiyama asalnya dari Sony lho, mana mungkin dia diem2 aja. Ada kemungkinan, salah satu usaha Sony dalam "menolong" SE (dan dirinya) adalah "berbagi brand lagi". Emang sih ada rumor kalo Sony gak bakal ngasih brand PSP ke SE. But.......... liat Jepang: Walkman keitai, Cyber-shot keitai, BRAVIA keitai. Gw seh mikir kalo bentar lagi Sony bakal bagi brand BRAVIA ke SE (SEMC global ya, SEMCJ mah udah dapet dari berapa taon lalu). Alasan pemikiran gw:
1. Standar mobile TV broadcasting udah ada: DVB-H.
2. HSDPA udah jamak hari gini, bukan barang langka lagi. Broadcast TV Udah siap lah kalo di negara ybs gak punya infrastruktur buat DVB-H.
Nah, mau gak mau, konsumen global pasti pengen "experience" baru dalam make hape: nonton TV (FYI, di Jepang orang gandrung banget sama mobile TV-OnSeg- gini lho). So far, gak satupun handset SE support DVB-H (okay, Nokia got N92 and N77, both failed at some markets). Ngomongin DVB-H, plis buang jauh-jauh pikiran tentang hape Cina!

Liat lagi seri F SE. Klo ini sukses, kemungkinan pasti dibikin suksesornya. Ini alasan dari sisi internal SE ya. Dari eksternal, Nokia punya OVI dan N-Gage Arena, mereka sekarang jualan game. Klo SE gak mengantisipasi ini, abis lah pasar ini dimakan Nokia sendiri. Jadi masih ada kemungkinan Sony mo ngasih brand PSP ke SE (asal seri F bener2 suikses dulu!!!).

Kesimpulan dari bacotan gw di atas: gak segampang itu nutup joint venture. Masih ada jalan lain.

Sony ma Ericsson mo pecah itu juga sempet ada rumor tapi dah lama tengelem karena masalah produknya yang kurang laku secara signifikan setelah merger tapi sekarang ada rumor kembali karena masalah teknologi yang jenuh akhir2 ini.

G705 - On Preview (Part 1) dari Cell Phone Sail :

Once again before its announcement time I’ll write about this slider. The G705 or Kumiko

The front part of G705 utilised glossy material, the screen is under the same piece of plastic as a whole front. The back of the phone is matte plastic while the side of the phone using chrome material which applied to the side buttons (volume roker and camera key) as well. The earpiece place next to video calling camera and light sensor is on another side. There is a Play/Pause key on the top of the phone doubled as shorcut to access last played track from music player. The 3.2 Mega Pixel camera is on the back with LED Photo Light and Video Red Light on both sides of the camera lens. The fast port is place at the very top of right side of the phone and there’s a M2 logo on the same side. The way of open the battery cover is interesting, there is a switch place at the bottom part of the phone to lock the cover. Under the cover is femiliar BST-33 battery and on the side you’ll M2 slot (yes, you have to remove the battery cover before do anything with the card). The mouthpiece is on the left of the keyboard. Typing on G705 is not too bad with good size buttons and well distinguished between them (the keyboard using different approach from C905 and F305). When you slide the phone up, you’ll notice the resemblance pattern of the speaker at the back of slide up part of the phone in matte material.
