Memang pada awalnya P5 (waktu itu code name nya masih Bella, bukan Paris) dirumorkan akan punya dual sliding, QWERTY ke samping dan keypad biasa ke bawah. Tapi kayanya gak jadi. Atau belum, mungkin baru ke generasi berikutnya akan diterapkan, Kita tunggu aja.

Sayangnya Paris yang sekarang punya nama lain selain P5, yaitu P200 (mungkin ini internal name), ternyata masih menggunakan hardware lama : 208 MHz...

Sony Ericsson signed today an agreement with Acrodea, a Japan-based company, according to which, future mobile phones released globally by Sony Ericsson will come preloaded with Acrodea products. More exactly, the SE handsets will feature VIVID UI and VIVID Panorama, two software solutions developed by Acrodea in order to improve the multimedia and photo camera capabilities of mobile phones.

The VIVID UI platform was created by Acrodea as an advanced middleware capable of integrating mobile multimedia content, including videos, 3D graphics, animations and normal photos/images. The purpose of the VIVID UI is, apparently, to bring more graphically enhanced content to handsets and to end users, by allowing the creation of menu transitions and the emulation of menu content.

Developed together with Morpho, Inc., VIVID Panorama is Acrodea's middleware that can improve the functionality of mobile phone cameras. Using VIVID Panorama, we can take panoramic photos with almost any handset that features a camera with video recording. Acrodea says that, in order to take a panoramic shot with a mobile phone, all users have to do is turn on the video recording function and "pan the desired range". After that, VIVID Panorama automatically creates the photo, based on the captured video images. Pretty cool, isn't it?

For the moment, we can't say whether all the future Sony Ericsson handsets will come with Acrodea products, or only a few of them. But from the product's presentation, we assume that only high to mid-end devices will benefit from the announced improvements – we'll probably find out more about this in the months to come. Anyway, the Acrodea – SE collaboration surely represents good news for Sony Ericsson's fans as well as for mobile users in general. Iya sih, aku juga gak terlalu tertarik dengan Paris. Mending pilih Bei bei.
Bentuknya lebih elegean IMHO.

Soalnya pengalamanku melihat beberapa merek seperti samsung, slider keatas gitu, dari tiap model ke model, pasti ada baret sedikit di tuts tombolnya.
Sedangkan Xperia, sudah pasti tidak tergores, karena sudah slider samping, plus ada busurnya diki. jadi lebih keangkat.

sama kyk W550 gw dulu juga kegores tiap kali swivel..ada bekas goresannya gtu diujung keypad sebelah bawah...

gw juga ga tertarik ma paris bro...

sejujurnya andai p1 diupgrade prosesor, ma RAM ama dikasih java 3D supaya bisa maen game 3D tuh gw yakin pasti keren bgt..

Sony Ericsson is hoping to become the Nintendo Wii of the mobile phone industry following a deal with a company that turns your phone’s camera into a motion-controlling sensor.

Pocket-lint has learnt that the mobile phone giant has signed a deal with Californian company GestureTek to bring their software to Sony Ericsson's handsets in September.

The software, which is the same as currently used on Sony’s EyeToy device for the PlayStation 2, will work with new and old phones alike and will use the phone’s camera to sense movement.

Gamers will be able to directly control gaming characters on screen by titling the phone in a similar way to more expensive handsets with an accelormeter like the LG Secret or Apple iPhone.

Current games include Crash Banicoot and Super Monkey Ball.

Paris yang selama ini diisukan sebagai P3 (awalnya) kemudian berubah jadi P5, bahkan punya internal name P200, kemungkinan besar akan punya index final sebagai seri G (kayanya sih G903).

- Di samping body nya ada tombol Play/Pause, FF dan sejenisnya yang berkaitan dengan Music
Tapi... secara keseluruhan bentuknya katanya sih mirip hape merk BenQ-Siemens yang udah pernah ada sebelumnya...

World Wing = Layanan internasional roaming dari NTT DoCoMo.

---> Maksudnya ada Xenon Flash untuk foto dalam kondisi gelap, dan ada juga Photo Flash (nama lain dari Photo Light/LED Flash) yang bisa dipakai untuk video recording. Mungkin istilahnya berubah karena yang dipake adalah advance LED seperti yang ada di C902.

---> DLNA = Digital Living Network Alliance
Secara kasar sih bisa kita umpamakan sebagai suatu perangkat yang bisa berkomunikasi dengan perangkat lain di dalam suatu network, atau bahkan di rumah.
Misalnya di suatu ruangan ada printer atau TV atau komputer yang mendukung DLNA, maka C905 bisa berkomunikasi dengan perangkat2 tersebut dengan jaringan WiFi-nya.

Seinget gw sih, gw pernah (atau malah sering) bilang semacam ini : gw suka banget sama hape berdesain candybar, gak suka sama clamshell/flip dan swivel, sementara desain slider masih bisa dipertimbangkan.
Khusus untuk slider gw gak perlu bonus keypad retak, LOL, kalo ini nambahnya sekarang kok... j/k.

Mengenai SO905iCS : apa daya segalanya begitu menarik perhatian sehingga gw gak peduli lagi form factornya apa.

Indonesian Cellular Show 2008: Sony Ericsson C902 dan G900

Tepat hari pertama pembukaan pagelaran Indonesian Cellular Show Di Jakarta Convention Center, Sony Ericsson kembali meluncurkan dua ponselnya ke pasar lokal. Keduanya mengusung seri C902 dan G900. Dalam peluncurannya kemarin, vendor satu ini juga memperkenalkan jajaran aktor di balik beredarnya ponsel-ponsel Sony Ericsson di Tanah Air. Salah satunya yakni Djunadi Satrio, Head of Marketing Manager.

Menurut Djunadi, seri C902 merupakan ponsel kelanjutan dari kelompok ponsel-ponsel cyber shot Sony Ericsson. Kecanggihannya selain dalam hal fitur, juga desainnya. Mengadopsi model lensa slide out yang unik, posisi lensa tersembunyi di balik body ponsel. “Sekali geser, ponsel siap membidik objek,” katanya.

Ada lagi fitur unik dan bisa dibilang pertama kalinya dibenamkan ke ponsel cyber shot. Namanya face detection. “Saat kita mau membidik objek, auto focusnya akan otomatis mencari wajah atau muka kita,” jelas Djunadi. Dukungan photo flash membuat keterbatasan cahaya bisa diatasi. Ponsel ini juga telah mampu berjalan di jalur HSDPA untuk akses data berkecepatan tinggi.

Sedangkan seri G900 lebih memfokuskan ke koneksi internet untuk berselancar ke dunia maya. Fasilitas Wi Fi dan UMTS akan membawa penggunanya untuk keluar masuk situs yang diinginkan. Dukungan layar sentuhnya menjadi nilai tambah yang bisa dibanggakan pemiliknya kelak.

Mengenai fokus objek dalam membidik kamera, ponsel G900 juga tak kalah. Sekali sentuh maka objek yang di sentuh akan menjadi target fokus si kamera. “Sentuh saja mana bagian yang mau dijadikan sebagai fokusnya,” tambah Djunadi. Mengenai Beibei sama Paris juga sebenarnya ada 2 pendapat. Menurut USEB announcement nya di-cancel karena ada penggantian hardware, tapi menurut -- kalo gak salah -- Maxymis, tetep akan masuk ke announcement 17 Juni.

Yang udah hampir bisa dipastikan sih, tanggal 17 Juni nanti gak bakal ada seri Walkman yang diumumkan. Padahal bocorannya udah ada 2 tuh : Alicia sama Patty. Mungkin karena platform A300 nya belum siap kali ya?

Sony Ericsson F305 is for Fun and Games

The Sony Ericsson F305 is Sony Ericsson’s first Motion Gaming-enabled phone. Or well, no, that’s actually not true, but it’s the first to go by that name in particular. It’s a quad-band GSM phone with support for EDGE network speeds.

This low/mid-level phone sports some rather cool gaming features. The three pre-loaded games - Bowling, Bass fishing & Jockey - will enable you to use movements to play the game. Say, you load up the bowling game - how do you play it? Simply imitate the movement of the bowling ball throw with the F305, and you’ll be playing the game. Simple, isn’t it? It’s a bit like the concept behind Nintendo Wii, although I find it hard to believe this will work just as great as the Wii does. Other than the special gaming features, the F305 offers a set of PlayStation-like gaming keys just above the display, as well as a shortcut key to your games. If you’re in the middle of a game, but the battery is running low (meaning you’ve played almost 8 hours!), you can quickly plug in the battery Power Pack CCP-100 (extra accessory), and you can play for hours again. That’s actually a rather clever accessory, and I hope it’ll be available for other phones, although there’s a chance that won’t happen.

F305 features loud stereo speakers on the back of it, making your gaming experience even better. If you feel like challenging a friend of yours in a match, you can do this via Bluetooth on some games.

F305 has got a decent music player capable of playing the most standard audio compression codecs, including the über-compressed eAAC+ codec. The phone memory is a bit limited though at only 10 megabytes, so you’ll have to expand the memory with a Memory Stick Micro card. Your music can then be transfered via a USB connection. You can stream your music wireless in stereo, as the phone features the Bluetooth A2DP profile. You can also have a listen to the radio with the built-in FM radio, and recognize the music playing with TrackID.

The display on the front of this Polar White or Mystic Black phone is a 2-inch large TFT display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels, and up to 262.144 colours. While the resolution isn’t exactly excellent, it’ll make the rendering of 3D games quicker, and more games are available for phones of this screen resolution.

The F305 measures a good 96 x 47 x 14.6 millimetres, and weighs in at just 97.5 grams, making it a bit heavier than it actually looks. F305 will be out in selected markets in Q3 this year. We expect the price tag to be relatively low, considering this is a low/mid-end phone.

The F305 will be officially announced on Tuesday 17th.

Sony Ericsson S302 for Your Snapshots

We told you about the Snapshot series quite some time ago in a post about the new nomenclature of Sony Ericsson phone names, and today we’ll be unveiling Sony Ericsson’s first phone in this series - it’s called the Sony Ericsson S302 Snapshot.

The S302 Snapshot is a cheap camera-enabled quadband GSM phone with further support for EDGE networks. It’ll be available in Europe (S302) and China (S302c).

The S302 Snapshot sports a fair 2 mega pixel camera with fixed focus, meaning your shots won’t get past the snapshot-level, which is basically expectable from a product with that as its surname. It does, however, feature the more advanced camera interface from earlier Sony Ericsson phones, and considering it’s a low/mid-end solution, that’s not half bad. Further more, it’s got a photo light and it features PhotoFix as well, if you decide to use that.
Your favourite moments can be recorded on video, although it won’t be in that great quality, and the internal memory of only 20 megabytes is also somewhat of a hindrance if you had plans about holding your entire photo album on it. It is, however, expandable with a Memory Stick Micro card.

Photos and videos can be easily transfered via either Bluetooth 2.0 or USB 2.0 (notice the 2’s, did you?). If you don’t want to use either, you can post both your images on a blog, or print them directly with the built-in PictBridge support.

Other features worth mentioning are A2DP-support, media player, support for various audio codecs, PlayNow, TrackID, a built-in FM radio and the Access NetFront xHTML web browser.

The S302 Snapshot measures 101 x 46 x 11 (12) millimetres, and weighs a mere 79 grams, making it quite light. Its display is a 2-inch TFT-display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. The battery life is set to 7 hours of talk or 300 hours of standby.

The phone will be available in early Q4 this year, and announced on the 17th. It’ll come in Thunder Grey and Crystal Blue colour trimmings. Its price is yet unknown, but it’ll be quite low.

HBH-PV715, HBH-PV720, HBH-PV740 Bluetooth Headsets

Sony Ericsson - the brains behind Bluetooth, however self-centered that may sound - is planning to announce three awesome-looking Bluetooth headsets on the 17th this month. These three all offer superior battery life and - in my opinion - look very slick.

They’ve all got some features in common. These are up to 800 hours of battery life in standby mode (that’s over a month of battery life!) or up to 11 hours of talk, auto-pairing, digital noise reduction (DSP), auto volume-leveling, removable ear-hooks, as well as Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rates (EDR) for a faster and more stable connection.

HBH-PV715 seems to be the cheapest of the three, and is - once again, in my opinion - the better looking of the bunch as well. It’ll come in either the pictured white trimming or a black one.

HBH-PV720 is the headset for the more sophisicated and fashionable of us. You can personalize its look with StyleUp covers, and it comes with a pouch and a silver necklace.

HBH-PV740 is the professional headset for the business man or woman. It’s the only one of the headsets to feature a status display, and it’s the only one to come with a headset desk stand and USB charger. Apart from that, you also get the silver necklace with the HBH-PV740.

No word on availablity or price on these ones, although the price will probably be in the range of £60 - £100.

Tapi... karena sebelumnya ada informasi bahwa Paris ditunda karena ada penggantian hardware... masih ada kemungkinan bahwa Hecaro adalah Paris dengan hardware baru, jadi desainnya mungkin masih tetep sama seperti Paris yang sebelumnya kita kenal.

Soalnya kebiasaan SE kalo ngasih code itu merujuk ke satu hardware tertentu. Kalo suatu codename hardware nya ganti, code name nya juga bakal diganti meskipun desain luarnya bisa aja masih tetep sama.

Berdasarkan press release kemarin di mana Nokia membeli sebagian besar saham Symbian dan terbentuknya kesepakatan antara Nokia, SE, Motorola dan DoCoMo dalam membentuk yang namanya Symbian Foundations, maka nantinya hanya akan ada 1 open platform dari operating system Symbian.
Jadi... tidak akan ada lagi yang namanya S60, UIQ, maupun MOAP.

Tapi... berdasarkan press release tersebut juga, OS Symbian masa datang ini akan didasarkan pada S60 dengan mengambil beberapa teknologi dari UIQ dan MOAP. Katanya juga bahwa S60 yang sekarang akan backward compatible dengan Symbian baru ini. Entah dengan UIQ atau MOAP, kelihatannya sih gak akan compatible sama sekali.

Jadi... dengan dasar di atas, ungkapan "Goodbye UIQ" memang pada saatnya nanti harus diucapkan.

Awal tahun 2010 adalah rencana rilis device pertama dengan OS baru Symbian ini.

LONDON, UK; June 24, 2008 -- Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS™, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform. Together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone they plan to establish the Symbian Foundation to extend the appeal of this unified software platform. Membership of this non-profit Foundation will be open to all organizations. This initiative is supported by current shareholders and management of Symbian Limited, who have been actively involved in its development. Plans for the Foundation have already received wide support from other industry leaders.

To enable the Foundation, Nokia today announced plans to acquire the remaining shares of Symbian Limited that Nokia does not already own and then contribute the Symbian and S60 software to the Foundation. Sony Ericsson and Motorola today announced their intention to contribute technology from UIQ and DOCOMO has also indicated its willingness to contribute its MOAP(S) assets. From these contributions, the Foundation will provide a unified platform with common UI framework. A full platform will be available for all Foundation members under a royalty-free license, from the Foundation’s first day of operations.

Contributions from Foundation members through open collaboration will be integrated to further enhance the platform. The Foundation will make selected components available as open source at launch. It will then work to establish the most complete mobile software offering available in open source. This will be made available over the next two years and is intended to be released under Eclipse Public License (EPL) 1.0.

The Foundation’s platform will build on the leading open mobile software platform, with more than 200 million phones, across 235 models, already shipped by multiple vendors and tens of thousands of third-party applications already available for Symbian OS-based devices.

Sony to split from Ericsson for PSP phone

The PlayStation-branded-mobile-phone-in-production rumour is an oldie and a goodie in the tech world, having been floating round cyberspace for what seems like years, but new, juicy info has apparently come to light on the topic.

Yet again, it's said that a PSP phone is being readied for launch, but what's interesting this time round is that Sony is said to be considering going it alone for the new device - ditching the Ericsson partnership for the phone.

Marketing Week reports that sources in Japan and Korea say Sony is working on "converting" the current PSP model into a phone, and that it could hit the shelves in time for Christmas 2009.

The current PSP can be used as a VoIP phone via its Wi-Fi connectivity but does not currently contain the technology to use cellular networks. This report makes it sound like the new device would be a PSP with full mobile connectivity, rather than a branded handset, like the just-launched F305.

Another industry source is quoted as saying the relationship between Sony and Sony Ericsson has become "frosty", that Sony has learned from its "strategic error" of giving its Walkman name to Sony Ericsson and that Sony would "never" give its PlayStation branding to the Sony Ericsson joint venture.

Hmm, wajar saja sih.
PSP adalah salah satu senjata sony untuk memenangin serta mengankat PS3 yang sempat terpuruk di pasaran.

Jelas the one and only X1. Udah diumumin. Rencana rilis September. Mudah2an gak molor jadwalnya.

2. Cyber-shot
Udah pasti C905, si 8.1 Megapixel. Bakal jadi yang pertama untuk pasar internasional, di luar produk Samsung yang Korea only, dan gak memperhitungkan handphone buatan China. Jadwal rilis? September juga.

3. P-Series
Hecaro : Paris dengan hardware baru. Entah masih akan mempertahankan design Paris sebelumnya, atau akan ada perubahan. Yang jelas akhir-akhir ini -- di tengah rumor bahwa Paris akan di-cancel --- muncul Paris dalam warna baru : hitam dengan sentuhan orange di sekitar QWERTY keyboard-nya (sebelumnya yang ada hanya warna biru tua). Jadwal rilis? Belum jelas, yang pasti untuk tahun 2008. Kemungkinan akhir tahun.

4. Walkman
Apa yang layak ditunggu dari Walkman?
W950 --> UIQ smartphone, 4GB
W960 --> UIQ smartphone, 8GB
Idealnya, penerus dari W950 dan W960 adalah (jangan pikirkan W980 ya) :
Wxxx ---> UIQ smartphone, 16GB
Akankah in jadi kenyataan?
Menurut Michell Bak dari Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog, UIQ Walkman 16GB benar2 akan ada dan sedang dalam tahap development, untuk dirilis tahun ini juga. Jadwal rilis? Kalau melihat tradisi yang dimulai sejak W950 sampai W960, adalah di bulan Desember atau akhir tahun.

Mari kita tunggu kabar selanjutnya.

Sedikit tambahan informasi lagi.
Dari ketiga handphone yang di-cancel -- Paris, Beibei, dan Alicia -- kabarnya masih ada kemungkinan akan dirilis juga tapi di region terbatas. Yang jelas tidak untuk pasar Eropa.
Pasar Asia masih mungkin kebagian. Yang berminat silakan berharap. Tapi harapannya jangan terlalu besar biar gak kecewa.

MD John Harber says the manufacturer has a plan that is stronger than ever now...

Sony Ericsson’s product demonstrator, ‘Tom’, is a caricature of the typical Sony Ericsson customer: spiky haired, mid-20s and an infectious enthusiasm for gadgets.

Tom tells his small audience to think beyond the eight megapixels on the new Cyber-shot phone, the C905. He is flicking through a Sony PlayStation console keypad with everyone staring at a massive Sony Bravia plasma television on the wall.

There are no wires between the PlayStation, the C905 Cyber-shot phone or the games controller.

He flicks through the PlayStation control pad to show photos taken from the phone on the television.

The C905 uses DLNA technology over Wi-Fi to link different devices with minimal effort.

Sony Ericsson’s UK MD, John Harber (pictured, right), had been championing DLNA years before he took the reins at the manufacturer. He previously worked on Sony’s Bravia and Vaio brands, where he was, to use his own words, ‘boring people with this amazing but geeky technology’.

Harber, who joined Sony Ericsson two-and-a-half years ago, adds: ‘Now we’re able to see it in a way that people are excited by.’

Harber has long been frustrated by what he calls ‘the commoditisation of features’ such as megapixels. ‘It’s not good for anyone to go down the “how many megapixels for how much” route.’

Harber along with sales director Nathan Vautier and marketing director David Hilton have the job of explaining that the C905 is more than just an eight-megapixel phone.

He wants Sony Ericsson to stand out from rivals by being widely known for ‘phones that offer a richer and better customer experience’.

Another leap is about to be taken on a new Walkman phone. No details are available at the moment, but it is expected to have a monster 16GB of memory and what is rumoured to be a large touch-screen format.

Both the C905 and the new Walkman will address the big criticisms aimed at Sony Ericsson over the last 18 months: too many similar phones and nothing that stands out.

Sony Ericsson enjoyed critical success with its first two Walkman handsets, the W800i and W810i, as well as the first Cyber-shot phone, the K800i.

Since then, the manufacturer has tried to move beyond its slightly geeky heartland (or ‘pioneer youth’ as Sony Ericsson’s marketing-speak calls it), and has been criticised for failing to produce more stand-out phones. Critics say that the manufacturer has appeared to hit the market with a huge carpet-bombing assault of phones that deviate only slightly from a single mother template.

Harber accepts some of the criticism but says: ‘We’ve got a chance to make a step change with our two major phones this year. We’ve had a fantastic response from people we’ve showed the two phones to.’

Market Share
Sony Ericsson’s share of the UK market has crept up throughout the last 18 months, and even gave Nokia a run for its money in the run-up to Christmas. Sony Ericsson was just 3% shy of Nokia’s 30% -- a remarkable achievement given Sony Ericsson’s lack of handsets in the ultra-low category, an area where Nokia shifts thousands of handset per week in the last few weeks of the year. Throughout 2007, Sony Ericsson took 23% of the UK market.

Despite the growth in sales, there is a feeling that Sony Ericsson lost the momentum last year.

Harber says: ‘Our share for the year was OK, but we could’ve been better. We’re not behind our targets, and we’ve got the potential to make a big jump this year.’

There are some pretty severe obstacles standing in Sony Ericsson’s way, and some are of the company’s own making. There was a return to the bad old days of delays and shortages -- the C902, W980i and W350i were late to market, and frustrated the likes of Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4u and Orange.

There is also the small matter of Sony Ericsson’s competition. Apple’s new subsidised 3G iPhone will test the loyalty of Sony Ericsson’s ‘pioneer youth’.

He refers to his time at Vaio and says: ‘I’ve been in markets already with Apple in it. I’ve seen what they can do to computers and personal audio.’

The same threat comes from Nokia’s new Comes With Music handsets offering unlimited free music downloads. Harber’s closest competitor is Samsung, which is locked in a similar strategy to reach into prepay.

Harber says sales at the top end of the contract market have been difficult, with the likes of the K850i and W980i not quite hitting the heights many had hoped.

It appears to be a combination of customers tied into long contracts, consumer belt-tightening and the strength of the Euro against the pound.

Harber says: ‘New products are definitely being hit by the exchange rate.’

Because the pound was weakening in 2007, manufacturers were finding it difficult to bring the price in stores down as they were continually fighting against a rising Euro.

‘Technology Statement’
The two new Walkman and Cyber-shot handsets are aimed at exciting consumers, but the new Xperia X1 (pictured, right) will also do a similar job. But does it just pick up from where the Pseries of handsets left off? The likes of the P900 and P1 acted as phones that won a lot of positive noise on the online message boards among the small but loyal band of techy consumers, but also served to enhance the Sony Ericsson brand in the wider market.

‘Xperia is not a replacement, but it is a technology statement,’ says Harber. ‘It takes us closer into the business and professional user area.’

Xperia is another sub-brand for a company that has effectively built a business around Walkman and Cyber-shot, and it seems logical that names like PlayStation, Vaio and Bravia will be next.

‘Sony has a very strict requirement on this. If we use a Sony brand on a handset, the experience on the phone has to be as good as on the original product. That’s why we didn’t have Cyber-shot until we had a fantastic imaging phone like the K800i.’

The next most likely sub-brand is Bravia, which is already in use on Sony Ericsson handsets in Japan. ‘It depends on size and quality of screens and video on phones taking off.’

The prospect of a Bravia handset will no doubt excite Harber, Tom and the techy Sony Ericsson customers, but in the meantime, Harber is more consumed with the chance of turning Sony Ericsson from a challenger to the dominant power in the market.

Sony Ericsson’s Supermarket Sweep
The mass retailers like Tesco and Argos are a big priority for Harber this year. With prepay in the ascendancy, and contract handsets struggling, Harber has shifted the strategy.

So far, Sony Ericsson’s prepay efforts have appeared to be old contract handsets sneaking in the top end of the prepay market towards the end of their shelf life. Harber says there was a remarkable amount of thought into that strategy and it was the single biggest factor in the 2007 success: ‘We had 55% share of prepay phones between £75 and £100 in December.’

Efforts will now step into the rung below. ‘We had 30% of the £50 to £75 market, and a lot less of the segment below, so you can see where the opportunities are.’

He says the mass retailers are becoming increasingly important players in the market, and it is critical that Sony Ericsson is represented well there. But average prices are a lot lower for supermarkets.

Given that 11% of Nokia’s share from the so-called ‘ultra-cheap’ category, Harber says it is important that the manufacturer responds. ‘We will address that in the autumn. We want to bring the customer something in that area that they’re not getting, while making us some money.’

A deal between Sony Ericsson group and Sagem was signed last year to bring cheap phones to emerging markets. Harber says some benefits will come for the UK to take those low-cost phones to challenge in the £20 to £50 price bracket.

‘There’s no value in strong-arming operators’
After a couple of years riding in the mobile music area, Sony Ericsson has not only seen Apple bring its iPod format to phones, but Nokia is close to launching a service with unlimited free music downloads under the Comes With Music banner.

Harber says the difference is that Sony Ericsson will not take the confrontational approach with operators like Nokia.

‘Music downloads is not that lucrative a business. There is no such thing as free music,’ says Harber.

Harber says the Walkman brand won’t lose its credibility in the music market if there are competing services offering simple, free music downloads.

‘We’ve got PlayNow, and a music service is vitally important to Walkman. He suggests Sony Ericsson is planning its own version. ‘Whatever deal [Nokia] has, it can be replicated. It’s an open, competitive market. Don’t forget Sony has a major record label .’

However, he sees little advantage in working on a plan that involves conflict with operators. ‘I can’t see any value in strong-arming operators in a revenue share strategy.

‘We will offer the service where the operators choose. We are giving them a choice.’

The most obvious conclusion is that Sony Ericsson is putting its future in the hands of the operators’ own strategies. If operators don’t understand what consumers want, or move too slowly, they will surely bring Sony Ericsson down with them.

Harber says: ‘It’s a philosophy we set out when we were way below number two. It’s also a cultural thing here where we’re not hard-nosed sales people. It’s about building a relationship with your customers. Even if we were number one with a 40% share, we still wouldn’t do that.’

K320 dan K510 juga, lumayan bagus kalo mo dianggap low end. Sekarang kan harganya low end. Kalau aslinya, dari indeksnya tentu udah masuk mid end.
Btw, memang benar, kalo SE mo meningkatkan "share"-nya di pasar global ponsel, ya harus produksi hape2 low end yang keren, karena pasar ini yang paling gemuk.

@DrJones, T610 dulu heboh banget, karena pertama kalinya SE pakai kamera yang langsung masuk ke hape, ga pake beli aksesoris tambahan. Bentuk dan fitur2-nya memang keren sekali waktu itu. Udah blutut. Kalau T650, walau kameranya udah 3.2 MP, tapi sebelumnya udah banyak kamera2 Cyber-shot yang kameranya juga segitu dengan kwalitas lebih baik. Fiturnya juga biasa untuk harganya, satu2nya keunggulannya adalah design-nya. Yang punya T650 juga ga sebanyak T610 dulu. Kalau T610 dibuat lagi, mungkin memang sasarannya orang2 yang pengen mengenang masa lalu

Lagi butuh HP musik-kamera-internet nih. Gw bingung antara mau beli Motorola ZN5 atau W902 ini nih. W902 punya walkman, HSDPA, bodi tipis dan desain yang lebih mending... tapi ga ada WiFi. G900 jelek. Binguuuunnggg (dan anak2 sini ga bakal ada yang merekomendasikan motorola, hehehehehe....)

Earnings: SonyEricsson Q1 Collapses On R&D Costs, Lower High-End Sales

SonyEricsson (NSDQ: ERIC) sales collapsed to 2.7 billion euros ($4.3 billion) in Q1 - down eight percent from 2.92 billion euros in the year-ago period and 3.77 billion euros in the preceding quarter - thanks to ”slowing market growth in mid-to-high end phones”. Pre-tax profit also fell 47 percent to 193 million on higher R&D costs (the company will shortly launch its Xperia X1 Windows Mobile multimedia phone).

And average handset selling price fell from 134 euros last year to 121 euros “due to the impact of softer sales of high-to-mid end models in key markets”. But, in the earnings call, the company refused to detail which markets - and this is still high compared to Nokia (NYSE: NOK) phones.

Coupled with Nokia’s forecast last week of a shrinkage in the mobile market this year, it sounds like tough times ahead. Except Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson is forecasting 10 percent growth, thanks to emerging markets.

New president Dick Komiyama, in the call: “The industry still has a good potential for growth and our challenge is to ensure that we have the right product at the correct price. The first quarter of the year is always very busy in the telephone industry. Although it has been a difficult quarter, Sony Ericsson can be optimistic that it is on the right track in the long term.”

Sony Ericsson’s marketshare for the first quarter was around 8 percent, down from 9 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, but about the same year-on-year.

Not good news from Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC). The fifth largest handset manufacturer said today that slowing demand for its mid-to-high end mobile phones and its delay in shipping some new products will hit its second quarter sales and earnings. The company said it now expected to break even before taxes.

It now plans to ship 24 million phones in the second quarter with an estimated average selling price (ASP) of 115 euros ($181). It also said that it expected gross margins to decline, both year over year, and compared to Q1.

Jyske Bank analyst Robert Jacobsen told Bloomberg that the company’s current problems seem to be similar to the ones they had in the first quarter. The handset maker announced in March that slowing handset sales would hurt their Q1 earnings. Jacobsen, said, however, that he expected a “gradual improvement” for Sony Ericsson, and for them to return to profit in the second half. (Release).

Kamera gak tau karena belom liat hasil jepretan W902. Kalo musik sih W902 lebih unggul karena di pake pembelian seri W selalu dikasih minimal HPM-70 plus tambahan memory card. Ngeliat indexnya yg 9xx, kemungkinan dikasih 1gb ke atas. Trus soal internet, pilih 3G (eh, W902 hdspa gak sih?) ato wifi? Gw personally sih pilih 3G, karena wifi cuma tersedia di tempat tertentu aja, sementara sinyal 3G udah mulai banyak sekarang... kecuali kalo elo pake XL tentunya yg sinyalnya kembang kempis

Yang jelas Paris sama Beibei itu dicancel karena keduanya masih menggunakan hardware lama (setara dengan P990/P1/M600/W950/G700/G900) yang kayanya bakal menimbulkan banyak masalah seandainya dipaksakan menggunakan UIQ 3.3. (bukan UIQ 3 saja karena UIQ 3 atau UIQ 3.0 adalah seperti yang sekarang ada di produk2 smartphone SE).

Symbian diakuisisi sama Nokia itu bukan kemungkinan tapi sudah jadi kenyataan, beritanya pernah ada di thread ini dan juga di thread Informasi Umum Seputar SE.
System operasi Symbian nantinya akan disamakan, gak ada lagi yang namanya UIQ, S60, ataupun MOAP.

Sony Ericsson W302 – fashion for a penny

There is not much I can say about this phone. I could paint a picture of how great it is to demote a long in the tooth phone to the middle segment by changing its index. The recipe is very simple – take one Sony Ericsson W880i, strip it of all top-notch materials and metallic accents (they are expensive, right?), but keep the design intact and leave some features in there too. Naturally, some “vital” updates are in order, but don’t include the Walkman 3.0 player – a phone that goes for just shy of 200 Euro doesn’t really need it. And voila – you get the W302 that is due out this fall along with an “imaging-savvy” handset – the S302.

Will it generate substantial sales? I doubt that – the Nokia 6300’s lead in this segment has been undisputed lately; what is more its price keeps getting lower. But Sony Ericsson shouldn’t miss this opportunity to try their luck – after all, Russian roulette is just another way of running business.

Sony Ericsson W585i – same problems, new wrapping

Having fixed the keypad issue in the Sony Ericsson W580i, for some reason the manufacturer made the same mistake with the W585i (Linda) that is to replace it. I don’t know if they will change all faulty keypads, being aware of this problem, before these units reach retail stores or if Sony Ericsson will opt to let irritated owners crowd around service centers. Anyhow it will be very interesting to see the outcome.

The W585i is set to land in most regions in late August or early in September at a price point of 350 Euro, which is way too much. However the W580i was no different in terms of price and still managed to find a niche of its own and picked up a lot of followers along the way as its price kept falling down. The question is, what new features and attractions does the W585i bring to the table? First and foremost, it’s a 3G-enabled handset; secondly the loudspeaker is now mounted on the top edge, plus its volume has been boosted quite a bit. Then there is a 3.2 Mpix camera, which is pretty average in terms of image quality. All up, compared to the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic, the W585i pales as a music playing offering, but we'll get to that later in this preview.

On the downside, the W585i utilizes cheap plastic, and its dark color schemes don’t look particularly appealing (although the white-and-red edition is pretty neat). Sadly, Sony Ericsson is trying to cut costs in every possible way these days in an effort to boost its profits, hence the W585i’s subpar plastic (which is way worse than that employed in the W580i). So it came as no surprise when my dark-grey prototype lost its pristine conditions in a couple of months. What’s worse, they are very unlikely to rectify this issue – Sony Ericsson prefers not to waste its time and resources on nonsense like that these days.

The handset’s software is nothing to write home about – same A200 with Walkman 3.0, FM-radio, bog-standard applications and Google Maps. Unfortunately, no sporty applications or hardware – truly, why would they bring about a competitor to their Sony Ericsson C702, it’s always better to make your portfolio as clear-cut as possible. But in my opinion it’s complete nonsense – a lot of consumers went for the W585i’s predecessor largely because of its pedometer. But apparently Sony Ericsson know better what we really need.

The W585i is a pretty late call, since the Nokia 5610 has been around for ages and its price has been on a downswing of late. And while the W585i will go for 50-80 Euros more, it won’t have much to offer – the 5610 already trumps it in terms of player functionality, camera and sales package. This way, the future of the Sony Ericsson W585i appears to be vaporous at best; but probably they haven’t thought about it much, releasing the remake of a marginally popular device. Hello? I can see no owners of the W580i lining up for such a steep upgrade.

Sony Ericsson W902 – it should’ve been cancelled

What is a music playing flagship phone these days? Many put sound quality above all other things, since decent sonic experience can’t be delivered by a phone’s default processor and a handful of software enhancements, such as equalizers. To make a true music playing marvel you’ll need a dedicated DSP that will handle the audio department or at least an amplifier that will also make things look significantly better. However, Sony Ericsson has a different point of view with its Walkman line-up and probably thinks its competitors are into some nonsense with dedicated audio processors. This way, Nokia really shouldn’t arm its XpressMusic phones with the AIC33 chip – it only beefs up the tab and very few will actually appreciate the quality it delivers, which is a bit of an excess for a secondary feature like music. For some reason Samsung also focus on music, but it’s some sort of mistake too, apparently.

Another question that still remains unanswered, is whether a handset needs a 3.5mm jack or not in 2008. But then users will be able to user custom earphones and will figure out the difference in audio quality! So no, 3.5mm aren’t welcome in mobile phones. Interestingly, on some markets original Sony Ericsson’s accessories are incredibly thin on the ground – for instance, in Russia after spending just shy of 200 USD I still don’t have an original headset. Indeed, three are tons of pretty good fakes out there, but that’s about it – stuff like this goes for a couple of bucks in China, here they sell it for 50. Nice business!

The thing they are really banking on is that the W902 is a music-playing solution with whole 8 Gb of memory onboard. But what they keep mum on is that this phone runs good old A200 and carries around 152 Mb of memory. So these hyped 8Gb will come from a memory card packaged with the handset, which is a pretty good move, that counters a similar offering from Nokia whose release is slotted for the same time (although it hasn't been announced yet).

The W902’s camera module is nothing to write home about, as it has been carried over from the Sony Ericsson C902 along with auto-focus and LED flash. Its 2.2-inch display is pretty decent and doesn’t get washed out in the sun. But the real question is price – retailing for 330 Euro at the minimum, the W902 will be a dead weight for the maker's portfolio. And the reason for that is pretty simple – that Nokia-branded phone will offer more punch for the same money: 3.5mm audio jack, dedicated DSP inside and an 8Gb memory card in the box along with a remote controls and Maps application. So I don’t really get it – what’s the point of stealing ideas from other phones that are obviously better than the W902. If you have picked up something, then go ahead, enhance it and sell for the same money. All in all, I’m supremely disappointed – Sony Ericsson is turning into an imitator, although it wasn’t that long ago when they were at the cutting edge of the industry. A pity, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

P.S. If some of you think that I’m being harsh in this write-up – you are spot on. I just can’t stand what they have done to one of the market’s finest line-up in no time after 5 years of development and hard work. They had a wake-up call back in 2007. Apparently, they didn’t hear it.

London, UK - The consolidated financial summary for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (Sony Ericsson) for the second quarter ended June 30, 2008 is as follows:

Units shipped in the quarter were 24.4 million, in line with our June 27, 2008 interim announcement of 24 million units. Sales for the quarter were Euro 2,820 million, a decrease of 9% compared to the second quarter of 2007 due to unfavourable exchange rate fluctuation, continued slowing market growth in mid- to high-end phones and increased competition. Gross margin also decreased compared with a year ago reflecting a less favourable product mix, with particular impact in Europe, and increased price competition in general. Income before taxes for the quarter decreased compared to the second quarter of 2007 for the same reasons, as well as due to higher R&D investments as a percentage of sales.

Average selling price (ASP) for Sony Ericsson decreased both sequentially and year-on-year due to the impact of a greater proportion of lower priced phones in the product portfolio, as well as increased price competition in the market for mid- to high-end phones. Market share for the second quarter is estimated to be around 8%.

During the second quarter Sony Ericsson announced seven new phones, including its first 8 Megapixel Cyber-shot™ model, the C905. In addition the company started shipping 12 new phones, including a number of mid- to high-end Cyber-shot™ and Walkman™ models toward the end of the quarter.

“We are aligning our operations and resources worldwide to meet an increasingly competitive business environment and to help restore our capability for profitable growth. The measures we are taking are aimed at becoming a faster, more agile and more cost efficient organisation that can continue to create innovative products that excite consumers,” said Dick Komiyama, President, Sony Ericsson. “Our target is to achieve a reduction in operating expenses of Euro 300 million annually, with the full effect expected to appear within a year. We estimate that our restructuring charges will be of the same magnitude as our reduction in operating expenses, and we will incur such charges as our measures are implemented.”

Sony Ericsson joined leading phone manufacturers, operators and vendors in announcing its support for the establishment of the Symbian Foundation, an initiative that will enable all members of the foundation to use the Symbian operating software platform, royalty-free. The Symbian Foundation is planned to be operational by the end of 2008.

Sony Ericsson forecasts that the global handset market for 2008 will grow at a rate of around 10% from more than 1.1 billion units in 2007, with continued decline in industry ASP. The majority of this growth is expected to be in emerging markets where lower priced phones dominate.

Challenging market conditions are expected to prevail for Sony Ericsson for at least the rest of 2008, and in particular for the third quarter.

Kayaknya sih kondisi SE masih mending daripada Motorola. Masih terlihat ada usaha bikin HP.

SE terlalu terlena dengan kesuksesan seri W tahun2 sebelumnya.

Jadi mereka terlalu "menganak emaskan" seri W. Coba itung aja, berapa seri W yang udah diluncurkan sejak pertama kali kemunculannya (W800) dibandingkan seri lain?

Tapi mereka getol meluncurkan banyak seri W tanpa ada inovasi yang berarti di seri ini, hanya beda desain, dan kalopun ada inovasi, cuman inovasi "kecil" yang gak begitu berarti, sementara seri lain diabaikan inovasinya. Jadi kesannya SE cuman mengejar angka penjualan memanfaatkan seri W tapi melupakan inovasi. Mungkin bagi yang pertama kali beli seri W, gak begitu masalah, tapi bagi user2 setia SE yang mengikuti perkembangan HP2nya, lama2 HP2 SE gak begitu menarik lagi, karena setiap ada seri baru, ternyata cuman beda desain doang, tapi isinya ya sama aja dengan seri2 sebelumnya,malah ada kecenderungan dikurangi. Informasi baru mengenai Hecaro dan Beibei.

Hecaro --> Paris dengan hardware baru. Dikabarkan akan diberi ROM sebesar 8 GB.

Ada kemungkinan Beibei (yang di-cancel) juga akan punya hardware baru dengan ROM yang juga 8 GB. Belum ada kabar mengenai code name untuk "New Beibei" ini.

Kalo gw sih lebih setuju SE tetep bikin 8 MP atau 10 MP dengan CCD dan optical zoom... dengan kualitas yang bagus tentunya. Soalnya kalo balik lagi ke 5MP saja kan gak jadi pioneer lagi.
Kayanya SE emang pengen jadi pioneer lagi nih.... mudah2an aja bisa.

Emang sih Samsung juga kok yang duluan bikin hape berkamera 5MP, 8MP, bahkan 10MP... tapi semua yang duluan itu dibuat di handphone berjaringan CDMA dan dipasarkan khusus di Korea.
Jadi bisa dibilang bahwa C905 adalah handphone GSM berkamera 8 Megapixel pertama, dan nantinya kalo gak keduluan bisa saja SE mengumumkan handphone GSM berkamera 10 MP pertama.

New S500i Colour

Sony Ericsson S500i purple?

According to the official Sony Ericsson homesite the S500i will be only available in Spring Yellow and Mysterious Green, but if this photo is real looks like there will Purple version out also. Maybe this purple version will be limited edition, like the K800i silver was.

I think this looks real and the color is quite nice, even that I would much rather like to see a red version of S500i.

Contrasted Copper S500i now official!

When Sony Ericsson announced the S500i slider handset they told that S500i will only be available in two colors Mysterious Green and Spring Yellow. Looks like they have changed their mind and quietly announced new color version of Sony Ericsson S500i, called Contrasted Copper. We have also seen purple version of S500i but it's not official... yet.

In my opinion it's nice to see new colors, even that I think the yellow and green ones are cooler. I would like to see red version of S500i. I think that would be cool!

Someone needs a wakeup call…

It would be impossible for me to do a comprehensive, technically detailed write-up of how Sony Ericsson turned the million Euro incomes to expenses, and I’m sure it’d be rather uninteresting for you as well. That’s why I’m not going to do that nor try to do it. I will, however, try to sum up what went wrong and how. As you’d expect, this rant will reflect nothing but my personal opinions and thoughts on Sony Ericsson’s past and current decisions, as well as what seems to be Sony Ericsson’s future plans. Also want you to know that I’m uncertain whether or not this piece is finished. I can’t make up my mind on whether I should add more to make it more clear, or leave it as it is, so apologies in advance if parts don’t make any sense to you.

The copy/paste-strategy

Sony Ericsson changed its product strategy a few years ago. The company saw huge advantages of making use of the same hardware and software platforms with only few minor changes. Initially, the strategy worked out very well - probably because it was still of limited use.
Sony Ericsson announced the rather amazing K750 back in very early March 2005. The K750 is one of Sony Ericsson’s most innovative phones ever, period. It was such an immense update from K700, and the camera - which was the most interesting feature about it - was built upon the camera of the S700, and greatly enhanced. I doubt it came as a surprise for K750 users when it was announced the best camera phone of the year. The K750 wasn’t one to miss, and sales surpassed all expectations.

At the same day the K750 was announced, Sony Ericsson also announced another very similar phone, which featured the same stunning camera features, while also bringing the Sony Walkman brand into the mobile phone market. The W800 was born.

This is where Sony Ericsson’s now heavily used segmentation has its roots, and it wasn’t long until another Sony Ericsson trend arose. About nine months after the announcement of the W800, Sony Ericsson announced the W810 - a slightly updated W800 with a few hardware upgrades, such as adding quad-band GSM and EDGE functionality rather than tri-band only, and a slightly updated user interface, not to mention the arguably nicer design. And that was about it… Even though not much had changed compared to W800, the W810 sold very well, and Sony Ericsson managed to keep up the hype about their products, for now at least.

A month after the announcement of W810, Sony Ericsson announced the M600. And just about a week after that, the W950 was announced. Both phones were built on the exact same platform with the exact same operating system, with only minor differences to each. The M600 featured a full keyboard, whilst the W950 featured a rather regular keypad. It was obvious that Sony Ericsson had just taken its product segmentation to the next level with the M600 being a business phone, and the W950 being a music phone, although they were 99 percent the same. Have a look at the more recent P1 and W960 smart phones - the story continued.

Later that month, the K800 was announced. This was the successor of K750, and to make it even more obvious that this phone was “a camera”, Sony Ericsson hooked up with its Japanese parent company and branded it the very first Cyber-shot phone. Back then, Sony Ericsson said that only the best digital cameras would wear the Cyber-shot brand, and at the same time promised that the quality of the photos would be beyond the usual. Do you think they’d still be proud to say that about the C902 and K850 today? Personally, I doubt it when it comes to these two in particular as they’re short on quality compared to other market offerings, but I wouldn’t doubt for a second, that they’ll be prouder than ever to say it about the C905.

So, the K800 brought along some hardware upgrades and an entirely new software platform. It took a whole year for Sony Ericsson to announce its newest Cyber-shot flagship, which - in most cases - was no different than the K800. Once again, Sony Ericsson had added the quad-band GSM and EDGE functionality, slightly updated the software, and changed the design to a more appealing one.

By now, Sony Ericsson was slowly starting to fall behind, and had now made it pretty clear to most that they weren’t going to change this “hardware/software swap” trend - and well, they didn’t. As far as I can tell, the portfolio included more than forty of these phones from about 2005 to now. These are:

C902, D750, G502, K310, K320, K530, K550, K630, K750, K770, K790, K800, K810, M600, P1, S302, S500, T250, T270, T280, T650, T700, V640, W300, W302, W550, W580, W600, W610, W660, W700, W710, W800, W810, W890, W902, W950, W960, Z530, Z555, Z710, Z750, Z770, and Z780.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve missed some, or if some of you disagree with me, but fact is that the above mentioned phones are each very similar to at least one or more of the other mentioned phones.

Cutting down on the high-end products

Because of Sony Ericsson’s almost endless line of similar phones, many high-end consumers have left the company for others. Although it is not the only reason for Sony Ericsson’s decreasing phone ASP (average selling price), this has without doubt been one of them.

Sony Ericsson used to be a manufacturer delivering very high-end offerings with basically no comprises on features or size. Lately they haven’t been up for the challenge of keeping up with the game, and were late at incorporating newer, more advanced features into their phone portfolio. Here we’re talking about features such as GPS and WLAN. Sony Ericsson’s portfolio is still very limited when it comes to phones with these features, and while most of the new smart phones feature WLAN connectivity, none of them include a built-in GPS unit. If we’re going to take a look at the feature phones, it’s rather clear that only a few feature a built-in GPS unit, and only one - for now - does also feature built-in WLAN.

And when it comes to features, how many of Sony Ericsson’s latest phones would you say have brought anything new to the table? Not a whole lot of them, I guess, and the stuff that was brought to the table is nowhere near being as innovative as it had been just a few years ago. Take the recently announced T700 as an example - it brings absolutely nothing new to the market, and W890, which seems like the better and cheaper choice, is already on the market and has been for some time. The only thing new about the T700 is its design, and that’s what Sony Ericsson wants people to buy it for. In my opinion, that’s no way to run a company - to create products and hope that they’re bought based on their looks rather than functionality and features. Have a look on over at Motorola in USA, and you’ll know what I mean.

Will this change? Yes, and as a matter of fact it is currently changing, and started changing when Miles Flint gave his chair to the current President, Hideki Komiyama. Sure, it’s taken almost a year now, but I don’t think it’ll be that much longer now. Hideki has made it clear that the situation wouldn’t be much changed in Q3, but that they’re going all in on the fourth quarter of the year, and I must admit that they’ve got a strong line-up for the mass market, while still not forgetting all about the business segment.

Branding - just for the sake of it?

Sony Ericsson has currently got two Sony brands to go on segmented Sony Ericsson products; the Cyber-shot brand, and the Walkman brand. The use of the brands is one of the things Hideki Komiyama has to do something about.

At the moment, Sony Ericsson’s portfolio includes a total of nine Cyber-shot branded phones, from the low-end K550 to the high-end C905. Sony Ericsson’s portfolio also includes no less than 26 Walkman branded music phones, again from the low-end ones, such as W200 and W300, to the high-end ones, such as W902, W960 and W980.

Seeing there is such a great difference in these products varying from the very cheap end of the line-up to the more expensive ones, how is it that even the very low-end phones can wear the same brand of quality as the high-end ones? Well, it’s nothing but a marketing gig.

I am personally finding it very hard to believe that the W200 really “deserves” this Walkman quality brand. In my opinion, it was merely because the Walkman range didn’t include any really cheap offerings, so they just smashed on the Walkman brand, and went on hoping no one would notice. The same goes for the Cyber-shot range and many of the phones in it, especially the K550. They can’t seriously think that this phone is going to replace a digital compact camera. If so, they’re barking mad! Once again, this was just to make the range a bit more complete. What’s worse is that the K550’s Walkman copy, the W610, is actually a better camera phone than K550, because of the - in my opinion - horrific post-processing of the Cyber-shot camera software. Believe it or not, the difference is there, and it is evident.
The same thing goes for the Cyber-shot branded K770 and its generic sibling, the T650. Although the difference is less noticeable in this case, mainly because the camera module has been replaced for an excellent Samsung module, it should be clear to most that - up until now - the branding has been done just for the sake of it. By the way, the T650 remains one of Sony Ericsson’s best camera phones in terms of quality - even without the wonderful Cyber-shot brand.

Some will wonder why I’m writing “up until now”. This is mainly because Sony Ericsson recently announced the C905, that can actually replace a low/mid-end digital compact camera, and because most Walkman phones are actually decent music phones, although the majority are still victims of Sony Ericsson’s heavy segmentation, meaning the cameras are just about worthless in most cases.

Discouraging financial results

I don’t know about you, but I loved every single bit of the Q2 financial results, and I even laughed when I read the part about the huge profit drop. The results were indeed very discouraging, and I’m hopeful that they were discouraging to such a degree that it opened Sony Ericsson’s eyes.

The operating income turned negative. I’m most certain this means they’ve manufactured too many phones that simply didn’t sell. I blame a large part of this problem on the amount of similar phones, and Sony Ericsson’s excessive software modifications for each of its two Sony brands, especially when it’s far from up to the level it should be.

One thing I loved about the financial results is that Sony Ericsson claims that the market is proving challenging. I think someone needs a wakeup call, ASAP! It really can’t be that hard to understand that the market doesn’t want three different variants of each phone, where the only difference is the branding and price. In addition to that, it really can’t be that hard to understand that the expenses will triple when manufacturing and marketing three similar phones instead of just one.

Conclusion

So, is it really as bad as it sounds? Well, partially. So far I’ve only mentioned the bad stuff and how it went bad. Sony Ericsson has come up with some fabulous phones recently, including the C905, G700, G900 and X1. These represent the very best Sony Ericsson has to offer, and this golden league will soon welcome a few very much needed additions.

The fact that Sony Ericsson’s sales didn’t go down substantially also means that there are still many people out there that do want to buy Sony Ericsson products. Lately, Sony Ericsson’s strategy just hasn’t been any profitable, mainly because the number of similar phones has been growing a lot.

Another factor that goes to prove that Sony Ericsson knows about their problems is the fact that about 2,000 employees are to be sacked. How can this possibly be a good thing, you ask? Well, Sony Ericsson’s portfolio has been flooded by - let’s just call them copy/paste phones - and lots of them! It’s been reported that Sony Ericsson had expanded its portfolio by about fifteen mobile phones year on year, and I suspect the majority are copy/paste phones. For each phone a massive crew is needed of more than 100 employees. Yes, that’s for each phone, even if they’ve been through the photocopier! That means the majority of the 2,000 employees that are to be sacked could come from the development and marketing of copy/paste phones. Official spokespeople have even said that a great part of the cuts will be in Sweden, which adds up perfectly to the above mentioned theory.
But wait, what about the rest? Well, it’s not exactly unusual for a company with such an immense profit drop to lay off a number of employees, and I guess that’s also the reason in Sony Ericsson’s case.

I’ll leave you with that, and wrap up this rant. It’s not all bad, and things are (slowly) turning, although it’ll definitely take some time. If you’re willing to wait, you should do it. If not - well, you might want to reconsider, and keep in mind that it really isn’t as bad as it looks, although it might sound harsh and feel like the most stupid thing in the world to support Sony Ericsson at times.

Bravia Phones Coming to India!

Sony Ericsson to leverage on parent brand

Facing tough competition in India, Sony Ericsson, the handset arm of Sony, is now dialing its parent company Sony to leverage the brand recall of its brands like Walkman, Cybershot and Bravia to take on its rivals.

With just about 13 per cent market share in mobile handsets in India the company is way below the 62.5 per cent market share enjoyed by Nokia, the market leader.

So Arun Sethi, President, Sony Ericsson India, is tapping the brands owned by its parent Sony to ring in better brand recall for its handsets.

It has already launched Walkman and Cybershot brands in the mobile segment and now it is the turn of Bravia Sony's popular TV brand.

"In Japan if you see we have already integrated the brand Bravia in the handset business and with the time we will do that in India too," said Sethi.

Sony Ericsson expects India to contribute almost 25 per cent of the global handset business over the next two years.

To do that Sony is ramping up its manufacturing facility in India to churn out almost 10 million handsets a year, most of which will be low cost, in line with the rural thrust of many mobile operators.

"We are aware of people's need to be connected. The people is rural India will be using our AM phones so we know that there are special needs there and we know how to fulfill," added Sethi.

Sony Ericsson is also getting ready to ride the 3G boom using its experience in Japan to pip Nokia to the top post in 3G handset business.

Ternyata, feeling gue soal kemunduran SE yang diakibatkan strategy copy paste product jadi kenyataan.
Udah dari tahun kemarin gue ngerasa makin lama produk2 baru SE cuma sekedar cosmetic make up doank dari produk yang udah ada. Kalopun ada yang baru cuma nawarin sedikit perbedaan fitur dibanding existing model.

Sony CEO thinking over Ericsson joint venture: report

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Sony's (6758.T) joint venture with cell phone maker Ericsson (ERICb.ST) must do better, Sony's chief executive was quoted as saying by a German newspaper on Wednesday.

Asked whether Sony is planning to end its Sony Ericsson joint venture, Howard Stringer told Die Welt: "It's certainly been a difficult year but buying out a partner is never an easy thing."

Sony lowered its group net profit forecast for the year to March by 17 percent, citing a slump at Sony Ericsson and weakening prospects for its electronics division amid tough price competition.

"We have to work together again as we did two years ago. Or the joint venture will have to find its own solution," Stringer said.

He added that it was hard for a company to be as nimble as possible when it works in a joint venture.

"You're always engaged in discussion and negotiation. We and Ericsson are always discussing ways of making Sony Ericsson as successful as it possibly can be," he said.

Yahh, Sony nuntut SE bisa sukses seperti tahun2 kemarin, klo kaga SE bisa bubar, yah sama sih, gw juga mikir gitu, klo produknya kaya tahun kemarin2 memang payah.

padahal kayak W 910 dan W 980 ok loh.
P1i dan akhir2 ini seperti G900, juga sudah ok.

G900 sebelum dirilis penuh dengam berita negatif, ternyata setelah dirilis, banyak brg kosong.

Melanjutkan tradisi sebelumnya, terutama dalam 2 tahun terakhir ini, Sony Ericsson kembali menambahkan varian warna baru untuk beberapa handphone-nya yang sudah dirilis. Di antaranya adalah untuk K770, W980, W910, dan W350.

Dengan penambahan 4 varian warna baru, K770 menjadi handphone Sony Ericsson dengan pilihan warna terbanyak, yaitu 9 pilihan warna.

Rata2 produk keluaran tahun 2008 ini uda bagus banget kok, yg payah tuh 2007 dan mulai pertengahan 2006, kayanya K800 itu best phone terakhir dari SE deh seblm 2008 ini, itupun ada jeleknya dikit, video recordernya antique.

Artikel dangkal yg rada ambigu, bisa salah tafsir kalo baca sekali doang. Stringer bilang We have to work together again as we did two years ago, coba temen2 inget apa yg SE lakuin 2 taon lalu.

Yap! Sony ngebagi brand Cyber-shot sama SE 2 taon lalu (Walkman dikasih setaon sebelomnya). Dan hasilnya......... Walkman dan Cyber-shot phone bener2 ngangkat sales SE. Soal kualitas (Walkman/Cyber-shot beneran-kayak W800,810,900,K800,810- atopun for branding sake-W200,K550-) itu soal laen, yg pentng jualan laku, yg beli banyak. Nah, klo sale-nya booming, SE dapet profit gede dong. Klo profitnya gede, jelas Sony sama Ericsson dapet dividen gede juga. Gw rasa Sony gak bakal "mutusin" Ericsson gitu aja. Coba bayangin deh, klo SE bener2 dimampusin sama Sony, trus perangkat home/audio/laptop Sony yg support DLNA siapa yg beli?? LG dan Samsung juga bikin piranti yg support DLNA, dan hape2 yg bakal mereka rilis juga dikasih fitur ini (INNOV8 got it). Ini yg gw sebut strategi "loe beli barang ini, supaya lebih keren beli yg ini juga". Konsumen akhirnya terdorong beli hape dan piranti laen (laptop misalnya) yg sama2 support DLNA. Okay, get over the DLNA thingy.

Gw seh nangkepnya, si Stringer pengen ngulangin sukses 2 taon lalu. Caranya? Dia udah bisa mbaca pikiran the average Joe and Jane (pembeli awam, bukan kaum FP!). Mereka kan rata2 mikirnya "Wow, hape ini ada label Walkman, musiknya pasti nendang neh, beli ah", "Wow, Cyber-shot phone, jepretannya pasti keren, beli ah", etc. Bagi orang awam kayak gitu, label/branding itu sangat decisive lho. Coba perhatiin di sekitar temen2, sebagian besar user SE pake hape apa sih? Klo temen2 gw yg make SE, mayoritas sih seri W.

Hmmm..... Dick Komiyama asalnya dari Sony lho, mana mungkin dia diem2 aja. Ada kemungkinan, salah satu usaha Sony dalam "menolong" SE (dan dirinya) adalah "berbagi brand lagi". Emang sih ada rumor kalo Sony gak bakal ngasih brand PSP ke SE. But.......... liat Jepang: Walkman keitai, Cyber-shot keitai, BRAVIA keitai. Gw seh mikir kalo bentar lagi Sony bakal bagi brand BRAVIA ke SE (SEMC global ya, SEMCJ mah udah dapet dari berapa taon lalu). Alasan pemikiran gw:
1. Standar mobile TV broadcasting udah ada: DVB-H.
2. HSDPA udah jamak hari gini, bukan barang langka lagi. Broadcast TV Udah siap lah kalo di negara ybs gak punya infrastruktur buat DVB-H.
Nah, mau gak mau, konsumen global pasti pengen "experience" baru dalam make hape: nonton TV (FYI, di Jepang orang gandrung banget sama mobile TV-OnSeg- gini lho). So far, gak satupun handset SE support DVB-H (okay, Nokia got N92 and N77, both failed at some markets). Ngomongin DVB-H, plis buang jauh-jauh pikiran tentang hape Cina!

Liat lagi seri F SE. Klo ini sukses, kemungkinan pasti dibikin suksesornya. Ini alasan dari sisi internal SE ya. Dari eksternal, Nokia punya OVI dan N-Gage Arena, mereka sekarang jualan game. Klo SE gak mengantisipasi ini, abis lah pasar ini dimakan Nokia sendiri. Jadi masih ada kemungkinan Sony mo ngasih brand PSP ke SE (asal seri F bener2 suikses dulu!!!).

Kesimpulan dari bacotan gw di atas: gak segampang itu nutup joint venture. Masih ada jalan lain.

Sony ma Ericsson mo pecah itu juga sempet ada rumor tapi dah lama tengelem karena masalah produknya yang kurang laku secara signifikan setelah merger tapi sekarang ada rumor kembali karena masalah teknologi yang jenuh akhir2 ini.
