Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Rachael closer to officialdom

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 (a.k.a. Rachael) just made another public appearance, confirming the rumors that its official announcement is coming as soon as 3 November. An official sales brochure of what is Sony Ericsson make-or-break project appeared online, revealing another particularly cool part of the handset.

Update: Sony Ericsson have already setup a mysterious landing promo page for their "next big thing", coming on 3 November. The only link available on this landing page leads to Sony Ericsson homepage but not without including a referral for its origin, which quite directly mentions Rachael ([tautan dihapus] Well, the mysterious landing page is no longer such a mystery. Ain't that right, Mr. Watson?

Now back to that leaked XPERIA X10 sales brochure. The new fact that we managed to get out of it is that the Android-running handset will pack 32GB of internal memory, expandable even further with memory cards. That puts the XPERIA X10 on top of its class, matching the Nokia N97 record.

Just don't get overexcited about that 1080p logo on the brochure. Much like Sony advertise their digicams, we bet it doesn't have anything to do with video recording, but instead indicates that the camera can be set to capture FullHD 1920 x 1080 pixel images (which is mere 2 megapixels really, so not a big challenge for a 8 megapixel camera).

Sony Ericsson officially confirms Xperia X10 Android upgrade

Word on the grapevine was that Sony Ericsson would update the Xperia X10 handset from Android 1.6 to a newer version of Android at some point and now the company has confirmed it. In a lengthy post on the Sony Ericsson Product Blog, Sumit Malhotra talks through the dilemmas of moving to newer Android firmware, despite the feeling that SE’s efforts on the top layer negates that need.

“I have faced head to head comparisons between Xperia X10 and generic 2.1 Android devices (as well as other OS) and carriers have concluded that we still stand strong in comparison. This because of the layer that we ad on top of the generic OS,” says Malhotra.

However, he then goes on to say what we all wanted to hear. “What I hope to get across to you all, is that there will be a software update for Xperia X10 that will upgrade the complete Sony Ericsson User Experience Platform based on newer version of the Android OS.”

Now we just need to know whether this means the Xperia X10 will ship with the newer Android firmware or whether this will come at a later time.

Err, sekedar buat bro tahu saja. Multitouchnya 2.1 masih halusan punya apple. Di Nexus terkadang multitouchnya terkadang bisa menyebabkan buggish di virtual keyboard.
So my opinion multitouchnya belum berfungsi dengan sebaik baiknya.
Masih bagusan pinch zoomnya.

Xperia X10 Hands On: Closing Thoughts

So, there you have it and I’ll admit, having just re-read the above myself, this reads as if I think that the Xperia X10 is a masterstroke of handset design. Ultimately, however, this is exactly what I think and I see no justifiable reason as to why I should pretend otherwise.

Had the X10 have left me feeling cold, I would have told you. But it didn’t. What it did do is serve to reaffirm that, as mentioned above, Sony Ericsson have woken up, smelt the coffee and have obviously decided its time to reaffirm themselves in the handset market. And the X10 will indeed do just that, and it’ll do it with aplomb.

The Xperia X10 is a revelation. It not only looks great, but it runs like a dream and the thought SE have put into this handset – its design, its features, its usability – positively shines through. The X10 is sheer brilliance, pure and simple.

Or, if you really want me to put myself on the line here, I’ll put it another way. Alex (our Sub) asked me, on my return from the SE press event, whether I’d actually consider replacing my beloved iPhone 3GS with an X10 and I could only offer him a single word answer.
