Sony Ericsson X10 vs Nexus One – which phone’s better?

If you remember, I said, when it was still firmly in the realm of rumour, that the Nexus One would cause problems for other manufacturers, if Google actually released it themselves. Y’know, ‘cos it’s the actual Googlephone, so people might see that, and think it’s better than any other Android phone out there. You may also remember that I name-checked one upcoming phone, in particular: the Sony Ericsson X10.

And that got me thinking. Maybe the Nexus One will cause problems for the X10, but when you get right down to it, which one is the better phone?

Well, if you look at the hardware, first of all, you may well be inclined to say the Sony Ericsson X10 is the better phone. It’s got the same 1GHz Snapdragon processor, but on top of that, it’s got a bigger screen, and a substantially better camera. Fair enough, the screen on the X10 isn’t an AMOLED screen (which the Nexus One is), but it is nearly half an inch bigger, and anyone who tells you that size doesn’t matter is lying (as confirmed by a lady friend… don’t ask).

And as for the camera, well… it’s 8 megapixels, instead of 5, and it’s following on from the legacy of Sony Ericsson’s Cyber-Shot series. In other words, it’s impossible for it to not be better than the Nexus One’s camera. When it comes to software, though, things aren’t quite as cut and dried. Y’see, the Nexus One has version 2.1 of Android, whereas the X10’s running version 1.6, and there are quite a few differences between the two, most notably that the Nexus One can run Google Earth, and has proper turn by turn navigation in the Maps app. To mitigate against that, the Sony Ericsson X10 uses its own interface on top, and that’s one of the areas is garnered a fair bit of praise.

Y’see, they’ve installed a social-networking-friendly interface on top, called Timescape. And although it looks very different, it’s a similar concept to the MOTOBLUR UI you find on the Motorola DEXT, with the emphasis being on aggregating your social networking feeds into one big, centralised lump. So, in all honesty, it’s a bit of a Mexican stand-off in terms of the interface.

And so we come to the usual bit I do at the end of these handset battles, where all pretence of objectivity goes completely out the window. In other words, it’s the “which one would I have” section. Well, that’s an easy one. Bigger screen, better camera, thinner body, and it just looks cooler. It’s the Sony Ericsson X10.

Of course, I’ll never actually have one, because I prefer Windows Mobile/Windows Phone to Android, but the result still stands. Advantage, X10…

Android Market now numbers 30,000 apps

With a long way to go to catch up to Apple's App Store, the Android Market has seen the number of apps available increase by a whopping 88% over the last three months to a current tally of 30,000. Estimates are that 60% of the apps are free with the remainder (40% for the math challenged) being paid downloads. Meanwhile, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that 60,000 Android handsets are being sold daily through the company's partners and it is that kind of growth that is the downwind helping the Android Market grow. The 10,000 app level was hit in September 2009 according to third party developer Androlib. Google itself claimed 16,000 apps last December and now says there are 30,000 possible choices in the Market. As a comparison, as of January, the Apple App Store was said to have 140,000 apps available. Research firm research2guidance recently issued a report saying that the entire app business would grow to $15 billion by 2013.

Gesture Search now available for Android 1.6+ worldwide

Google's Gesture Search for Android has been available for a limited number of devices for testing purposes for a while now, but it has just been released worldwide (it was US only so far) and to a lot more phones - Gestures Search is available for Android v1.6 and up (the first version was v2.0 and up).

Gesture Search for Android is a quick way to search through installed apps, contacts, bookmarks or music tracks - you just draw a few letters on the screen, usually two or three should be enough to filter the items till you have only several left. Then tap the one you were looking for and that's it - much faster than pulling up the on-screen (not to mention the physical) keyboard.

So, Gesture Search isn't handwriting recognition in the usual sense - typing with your finger is not a good idea anyway. What it is however is a quick and simple way for picking something out of a long list.

The new version of Gesture Search is available in all countries where the Android Market is available. It can only recognize the English alphabet though. The new version should also work a bit faster and have less bugs.

btw... maksudnya kalo ada link di email ga bisa diklik? berarti kalo ada attachment or link ke webpage laen ga bisa langusng proses dong? apa mesti copas dulu ke browsernya? agak repot ya klo gitu? maybe it's just a bug

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 triplets got another round of "guess the price". Also target availability dates were mentioned, but they've been pushed back from previous estimates. It looks like we’ve still got a couple of months to wait.

The smallest of the trio, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini, will hit the stores in late May for 300 euro unlocked (410 US dollars). Expansys lists the X10 mini at 300 pounds and according to their estimate, it's due on May 24th.

The QWERTY-wielding Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro is said to be launching in late June for 330 euro unlocked (450 US dollars) in France and Belgium (possibly other countries as well). Turning back to Expansys, their estimate is again May 24th and 340 pounds cost.

However, Expansys previously estimated April 13th so take their estimates with a grain of salt.

Finally, the Sony Ericsson's Android top dog, the XPERIA X10, should start selling in April for 599 euro unlocked (815 US dollars).

The prices for the trio are for unlocked phones - as far as subsidies go, sub 50 euro prices are mention for carrier subsidized devices.

Beruntungnya yang sudah pre order. Selisih sejuta dengan yang preorder.

Dilihat dari hardwarenya sih mustinya support playback video 720p (kalo saya gak salah nangkep maksudnya bro, ya.
Tapi mending didownsize jadi wvga karena kualitas tampilannya nanti di hp gak akan kelihatan. Malah buang2 baterai & space memori.

WOW... selisih sejuta dan april baru LAUNCH? tapii... di indo kan harganya uda ada... 6.999.000. hmm..... berarti kemungkinan hit storesnya bareng yang uda preorder dong yah hehe.... buat yang preorder sepertinya gak bisa bersongong2 dulu wahahaha.....

eniwei.. di india sono kok murah ya harganya... apa emang dapet subsidi pemerintah yah? hmm.... klo diliat2 kayanya kebanyakan barang2 hi tech di india harganya murah ya...

btw... gamenya x10 ga ada yang "enak" diliat yah.... mungkin gak yah nanti abkal ada developer yang ngembangin game2 keren sekelas iPhone baut andro ini? apalagi kalo diliat dari spec hardwarenya dijamin support buat game2 keren

Untuk sementara ini, urusan game memang android belum mendptkan banyak kemajuan seperti kayak iphone.

Tetapi mengingat ini juga dirilis di pasaran Jepang, dan Jepang itu biasanya identik dgn game dan anime, who knows kedepannya kita lihat saja, apalagi ada isu SE bekerja sama dengan Sony untuk membuat psp phone.

Mengingat ini open source kurasa tinggal menunggu waktu saja untuk somebody membuat sesuatu terobosan.

Dan satu lagi, SE sudah memulai kebiasaan TERBARUNYA, suka mengupgrade atau menambal bolong sana dan sini, walaupun diakuin cukup telat.

Sapa tahu juga x10 mendptkan game Monster Hunter Online kayak mobile phone di Jepang.
