• Masih akan ada pengumuman tanggal 3 November 2009 nanti, tapi ini untuk handphone yang akan dirilis mulai awal tahun 2010

Thread ini dibuat untuk menampung semua informasi mengenai rencana Sony Ericsson dalam hal produk handphone, accessories, layanan, pengembangan, dan lain-lain yang sifatnya masih berupa isu/rumor, belum resmi atau belum diumumkan secara resmi. Kalau suatu produk (barang/jasa) sudah diumumkan secara resmi maka akan dibuat thread baru khusus untuk produk tersebut dan di thread ini hanya akan dibuat post sebanyak satu kali saja yang merujuk pada pengumuman dan/atau thread baru untuk produk tersebut.

Sementara ini, info paling mutakhir adalah rencana pengumuman Xperia X10 Infinity (codename: Rachael) tanggal 3 November 2009, dengan rencana rilis mulai minggu ke-8 tahun 2010.

Sony's New Touch Panel Detects Amount of Pressure - Page 1

Sony Computer Science Laboratories (Sony CSL) Inc developed a touch panel that can generate tactile feedback and detect the amount of pressure applied to the panel.

The panel is targeted at mobile phones and was demonstrated at Open House 2010, which took place May 28, 2010. It can detect not only the x and y coordinates of a fingertip but also the pressure applied in the direction of the z-axis.

This time, Sony CSL combined the new touch panel with a small display device that looks like a mobile phone. In the demonstration, the speed of switching icons displayed on the screen was changed by changing the pressure applied to the panel. As the pressure became stronger, the icons were switched faster.

For the tactile feedback function, actuators using piezoelectric elements were employed. Compared with the case where the eccentric motor of a mobile phone is used, they can realize a faster response speed, offering a comfortable operation, Sony CSL said.

The actuators vibrate the touch panel in the z-axis direction when they detect an input. The amplitude of the vibration is as small as 30μm, but the company claims that it can be easily felt by humans.

To solve the problem of the high drive voltage of the piezoelectric element, which was 300V, Sony CSL used a 16-layer structure so that it becomes possible to have the electric field gradient necessary to drive the piezoelectric element even at a low voltage. As a result, the drive voltage was lowered to ±9V.

"If the voltage is boosted by DC-DC conversion, it can be driven even by the rechargeable battery of a mobile phone," the company said.

Moreover, the size of the actuator was reduced so that it can be embedded in a mobile phone. The dimensions of the small substrate mounted with the piezoelectric elements are 30 x 3 x 0.8mm. And, to detect the amount of the pressure applied in the z-axis direction, Sony CSL employed a force sensing resistor (FSR), whose resistance value changes according to the amount of pressure.

The touch panel prototyped for the demonstration has six FSRs and two piezoelectric actuators under its bezel. Specifically, the FSRs are located in the upper, middle and lower parts of the right portion of the bezel as well as in the upper, middle and lower parts of the left portion of the bezel. The two piezoelectric actuators are positioned in the middle parts of the right and left portions of the bezel.

Will Sony Ericsson's mobile phone come with new panel?

Asked about when the new touch panel will be commercialized, Sony CSL said, "We would like to use it for a mobile phone as soon as possible." As for its costs, which seem to be one of the problems for the commercialization, the company said, "We will cut the costs by, for example, reducing the number of the FSR's functions."

If the panel is commercialized, it is highly likely to be mounted in a product of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB. In fact, the display device used in the demonstration was printed with "Sony Ericsson." In addition, there was an exhibition panel that indicates Sony's cooperation with Sony Ericsson.

Another day, another Sony Ericsson phone leaks. This time we get to see the still unannounced Android-running Walkman-branded Sony Ericsson X10 mini clone called W150i or otherwise codenamed TeaCake. Again, there isn't much to say about the device's specs beyond the obvious.

Even by looking at this low quality image it's easy to see how similar are the rumored W150i and the already available Sony Ericsson X10 mini, which we reviewed last week. Word on the street is that both devices won't only look the same but that they will share almost the same features.

So, the W150i runs Android v1.5 for now with the same customizations X10 mini has). The retail version could probably have a more recent version of the OS.

Like the X10 mini, the W150i should also sport a 2.6" QVGA touchscreen on the front and a 5MP sharpshooter on the back. The new Walkman phone is said to be announced sometime this month.

Dari screen standby-nya, meskipun mirip tampilan X10 Mini, TeaCake kelihatannya bukan pake Android. Sangat mungkin bukan smartphone tapi bisa jadi A300(?).

Update 08 June: We just received an anonymous tip about the upcoming Sony Ericsson W150i. Beside a much better quality photo, which we can't show you (sorry, guys), we also know the following. As its name suggests Sony Ericsson W150i is an entry level touch model, which is a first for Sony Ericsson. It doesn't have 3G connectivity or Wi-Fi and it's only got dual-band GSM/EDGE support. There's a 2 megapixel camera on the back. Our source goes even further saying it's not Android we're seeing here but some other type of touch UI. We find that hard to believe, but who knows. Sony Ericsson might just surprise us this time.
