• Hampir semua handphone untuk tahun 2009 sudah dijual di toko-toko dengan pengecualian Xperia X2 (Vulcan), tetapi Xperia X2 juga akan segera hadir di bulan November ini
• Masih akan ada pengumuman tanggal 3 November 2009 nanti, tapi ini untuk handphone yang akan dirilis mulai awal tahun 2010

Thread ini dibuat untuk menampung semua informasi mengenai rencana Sony Ericsson dalam hal produk handphone, accessories, layanan, pengembangan, dan lain-lain yang sifatnya masih berupa isu/rumor, belum resmi atau belum diumumkan secara resmi. Kalau suatu produk (barang/jasa) sudah diumumkan secara resmi maka akan dibuat thread baru khusus untuk produk tersebut dan di thread ini hanya akan dibuat post sebanyak satu kali saja yang merujuk pada pengumuman dan/atau thread baru untuk produk tersebut.

Sementara ini, info paling mutakhir adalah rencana pengumuman Xperia X10 Infinity (codename: Rachael) tanggal 3 November 2009, dengan rencana rilis mulai minggu ke-8 tahun 2010.

Sony Ericsson CEO, Bert Nordberg, has given an interview to Swedish site sydsvenskan.se in which he mentioned several things such as Play Now Arena allegedly having 45 million customers (I can only assume that’s “potential” customers and not those actually using the service) and that SE have discussed the use of Windows Mobile 7 with Microsoft but the most surprising piece of information is related to Google and the Nexus One.

Nordberg admits that Google approached Sony Ericsson with an offer for them to manufacture the Nexus One before asking HTC, in his infinite CEO wisdom he turned them down! That’s right, Sony Ericsson could have been the manufacturer of the highest profile Android device to hit the market to date but apparently felt they don’t need such an affiliation. Nordberg cited preservation of the Sony Ericsson brand as the reason behind this decision but was it a good one?

Android gets a lot of press at the moment as it continues to gather momentum and the “Google Phone” was talked about as much as anything on the internet. Now it has finally come to light as the Nexus One, is the brand recognition exclusively Google or do we all clearly know that it is produced by HTC? Have HTC suffered from a diminished reputation as an independent manufacturer or gained more brand awareness than ever before? Have they been unable to produce devices under their own moniker? We certainly do know that the Sony Ericsson brand isn’t exactly at it’s peak right now and this could have been a chance for them to establish themselves as the premier Android manufacturer…any guess who would currently be regarded as that? Personally I think that Sony Ericsson would have benefited from such a high profile collaboration, especially seeing as they are currently basing so much of their future success on Android. Being known as the manufacturer of choice for Google would only boost the reputation of Sony Ericsson’s other devices and keep them in pole position to take advantage if Google’s plan really pays off.

Perhaps then it was Google’s new approach on distribution that was the real problem, Nordberg also said:
“It would be in itself an alternative way out to the market but we’d rather by their own efforts on the important U.S. market”

On this angle I’d have to agree. The Nexus One hasn’t set the world on fire in terms of sales figures and that’s quite probably due to the limited global availability and lack of any presence of the device in good, old fashioned shops. The online distribution model is not necessarily a bad one but Google needs to get the device out there to be seen and wanted by more customers, not just the loyal followers of tech savvy blogs, before turning to online only means. However, is the distribution of the Nexus One inhibiting HTC’s success elsewhere? I would say not, the Hero is selling well and of course the hardware developed for the Nexus One is soon to be released in it’s non-Google form as the HTC Desire, arguably an improved device, and who benefits from that?

Ultimately it seems bizarre that a struggling company would turn down an opportunity such as this. The benefits seem to clearly outweigh the potential costs and I don’t see HTC posting €160 million losses each quarter! Sony Ericsson need a new direction but perhaps they are afraid to actually take a different route, time to stop talking Bert and actually turn this company around.

Sony Ericsson UK Chief Says 16 New Phones for 2010

Sony Ericsson's Managing Director for the UK & Ireland, Nathan Vautier, recently gave an interview to Mobile Today, a British industry publication, in which he revealed that Sony Ericsson, in the UK at least, would be offerring around 26 handsets this year. Now 10 of those handsets are apparently models from last year as is usually the case with most manufacturers. However, a good 16 or so will be new handsets, only some of which we have seen. There is the 'Fab 5' of course, the X10, Vivaz and their mini spawn that were unleashed at MWC. Mr Vautier said that a fe wof the unannounced handsets would be Walkman branded and would be priced somewhere in the £100 range. That means they're most likely to be in the mid-range of the market, an area where Sony Ericsson seems to be struggling at the moment, and it also means that the Walkman brand isn't going anywhere as some may have wondered after the introduction of devices in the Xperia range with their lack of Walkman and/or Cybershot branding.

Mr Vautier also addressed the issue of quality control, an area that Sony Ericsson has come in for numerous bad press reports over the past year or so. He made mention of a revised quality assurance procedure with a greater focus on ensuring that devices were up to scratch and also said that the components process had been streamlined so that fewer parts were being used. All in all the responses did feel as if he was taking the matter seriously, but there were too few specifics on how things are to be turned around.

You know who knows everything? People familiar with the matter. In particular, they know everything when "the matter" happens to be Sony's handheld strategy for 2010, which is said to finally include an honest-to-goodness PSP with phone capabilities -- something the world's been demanding for as long as they've wanted a Zunephone. According to the WSJ, the device is apparently part of a larger push by Sony to create an iTunes-like Utopian ecosystem of products this year that connect to Sony Online Service, an ecosystem that would also include a hybrid portable of some sort that "blurs distinctions among a netbook, an e-reader and a PlayStation Portable." Details aren't offered on this particular monster -- but turning our attention back to the phone for a second, it's claimed that Sony's working with it in conjunction with the folks at Sony Ericsson under the direction of Kunimasa Suzuki, an exec largely responsible for the VAIO line who's also involved with the PlayStation team. Of course, SE's already taken some baby steps toward corporate harmony by bundling Remote Play support with the Aino, but everyone knows that PSP compatibility is the panacea; Microsoft finally buckled on the Zunephone thing with the introduction of Windows Phone 7 Series, and there's no reason why Sony shouldn't follow suit.

Sony Ericsson 'Evolve, Engage, Excite' Regional Media Launch

Hirokazu Ishizuka, Corporate Vice-President and Head of Asia Pacific Region, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, talked about the theme of the event which is 'Evolve' new portfolio, 'Engage' new partners, and 'Excite' the consumers.

"We have engage our partners to provide better entertainment UX (abbreviation for User eXperience) for the users, but today we would like to announce our partnership with MTV. Needless to say, MTV is a giant in the music entertainment and we are going to provide exclusive MTV content through the Xperia X10 (only). We are also working with several partnerships with announcements to come later on," says Ishizuka.

Ishizuka also mentions the company's focus on digital marketing campaign which includes Digital FIFA Activation - Take Asian kids to FIFA World Cup as Flag Bearers and Best Asian Blogger Voting on FIFA World Cup reporting in South Africa, in real time.

"We will be using digital brand ambassadors and are working on several campaigns with them and today we are announcing one of them - digital dance contest. So users can simply video shoot themselves dancing, upload and the videos would be judged by public and digital brand ambassadors. We would like to introduce our digital brand ambassadors...."
