Microsoft urges Nokia to offer Windows Mobile devices

Software giant Microsoft is in discussion with Nokia about plans to have the handset maker add Windows Mobile-powered devices to its portfolio.

Virtually all Nokia phones currently run the Symbian operating system and such a move would be a major change for the industry leader.

Microsoft’s mobile communications business international marketing director John Starkweather confirmed talks were taking place with Nokia but would not confirm when any announcement would be made.

“They obviously have significant investments in Symbian but there are a lot of places where we have significant synergies and we would love to see the day where those synergies would extend completely with Windows Mobile,” he told IT Wire.

While Nokia phones don’t yet have a Windows OS, they do use a range of other Microsoft software. This includes ActiveSynch for connecting to Exchange Servers and the PlayReady DRM technology used to protect purchased music and video content.

Windows Mobile currently only has just over 6% of the smartphone operating system market compared to more than 70% for Symbian. However, it is gaining acceptance among smartphone manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung that have released Windows Mobile based handsets offering similar features to the Apple iPhone which runs a mobile version of Mac OS X.

Starkweather said the existing relationship between the two companies was strong and he was enthusiastic about it developing further in the future.

“We work closely with Nokia and we would love to have them go all the way,” he said. “It’s something we talk about all the time.”

Nokia Touch UI phone code-named Tube

Word is that Nokia are finally preparing their own full Touch UI handset - codenamed "Tube". An image of the new handset was shown in a presentation slide at an event held in California yesterday. While we don't have the slide in question, we do know the Nokia Tube handset looks a lot like the Apple iPhone.

The Nokia Tube will be the first Touch UI device by Nokia and while Nokia officials are still not getting into details such as OS or shipping date, we are pretty much sure we are talking Symbian Touch UI here.

It would be a hard competition, since all sorts of rumors predict that Apple will be announcing a whole new 3G version of their over-hyped iPhone within 2 months and they will be releasing it within September.

Since the launch of iPhone in June 2007, Apple has shipped 6 million devices (actually being closer to 4 millions), but that doesn't put them anywhere near to being a major Nokia competitor, Tom Libretto, vice president of Forum Nokia said. "We've done that volume since we've had dinner on Friday," he shared.

Comments like that however only show the frustration of Nokia at the Apple's success - be it minor in volumes when compared to the millions of low-end handsets Nokia sells everyday. There is no place for dispute that Apple have achieved enormous success with their first and only handset - they've changed the structure of the American market for mobile phones beyond recognition and managed to create an unprecedented hype that made the iPhone popular world-wide even before it set foot outside American soil.

We haven't heard much of Nokia Touch UI interface since its announcement back in October 2007. While we did see a live demo at the MWC 2008 held in Barcelona, it was nothing close to a real device, but instead a computer emulation with a touchscreen.

It’s hot, it’s Nokia Tube live

Nokia Tube, the latest and highly rumored exceptional Touch phone, is no longer a rumor as live images of the device leaked today plus some details about the device feature pack.

As [tautan dihapus] reports, Nokia Tube runs on the latest Nokia 5th generation S60 full Touch UI and will be the first phone of a brand new handset lineup (no N-series here). Actually, Nokia Tube will not be even the flagship of that lineup – the actual flagship handset will be released shortly after the Tube.

Yet, the Nokia Tube already seems like a high-roller device that will have its say on the full touch market. The Tube is expected to have a 16M TFT display with 360 x 640 pixels resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. The size of the display will be somewhere between 3 and 3.5-inches. The display will offer a tactile feedback but sadly, won’t have multi touch function like the iPhone.

A stylus input will also be provided as an option and using it would hand-writing recognition.

The communication department of Nokia Tube is at its peak, sporting quad-band GPRS/ EDGE/UMTS and HSDPA with uPnP support, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP and AVRCP support. The built-in GPS with A-GPS and geotagging support completes the wireless communication set of the hi-end Nokia Tube device.

There is also going to be an auto-focus camera but the megapixel count is yet unknown.

Nokia Tube is expected to hit the market at the 1Q 2009.

Menanti perang Nokia Tube vs iPhone 3G

Siapa yang tidak kenal dengan merek telepon seluler (ponsel) Nokia? Boleh dibilang ketika pengguna ponsel disuruh menyebutkan deretan merek ponsel, yang pertama mereka sebut adalah Nokia.

Itu terjadi karena Nokia kini mampu mendominasi pasar dunia. Menurut data lembaga riset International Data Corporation (IDC), Nokia berhasil menguasai 38% dari total pasar ponsel dunia tahun lalu yang mencapai 1,1 miliar unit. Bayangkan, dari 100 ponsel yang terjual, 38 unit di antaranya adalah merk Nokia.

Akan tetapi, dominasi Nokia sepanjang 2007 sedikit terusik dengan kehadiran ponsel layar sentuh iPhone, yang diperkenalkan Apple di pengujung Juni 2007. Volume penjualan iPhone memang tidak terlalu signifikan untuk menandingi Nokia.

Apple hanya mampu menjual sekitar 4 juta unit iPhone atau seperseratus dari volume penjualan ponsel Nokia yang mencapai 437 juta unit.

Kehadiran iPhone yang hanya dipasarkan di Amerika Serikat melalui operator AT&T tersebut sangat fenomenal, karena memperkenalkan ponsel full multimedia berteknologi touch screen atau layar sentuh berukuran 3,5 inci.

Perangkat iPhone memiliki kapasitas penyimpanan 8 gigabyte (GB) dan 16 GB yang siap menampung file musik, video, maupun foto hasil jepretan kamera digital 2 megapiksel. Kehadiran fitur Wi-Fi memungkinkan penggunanya melakukan akses Internet melalui titik hotspot, layaknya mengakses Internet dari notebook.

Sukses iPhone rupanya memberi inspirasi Nokia untuk 'menghidupkan' kembali teknologi ponsel layar sentuhnya. Sebelumnya, pabrikan ponsel dari Finlandia itu telah mengembangkan device berlayar sentuh berbasis Linux, yaitu seri N800 dan N810, yang diperkenalkan pertengahan Oktober tahun lalu.

Nokia N800 dan N810 merupakan peranti Internet Tablet dengan fitur lengkap, karena bisa memainkan semua file multimedia dan tentu saja dilengkapi dengan Wi-Fi. Sayangnya, Internet Tablet itu tidak dapat difungsikan sebagai ponsel. Itulah sebabnya, kedua peranti Internet Tablet itu gagal mengalahkan iPhone.

Nokia kini menawarkan konsep baru, yaitu Internet Tablet yang memiliki fitur atau fungsi sebagai telepon seluler. Konsep itu dibocorkan pada acara Evans Data Developer Relations Conference California, AS, Selasa lalu. Nokia belum memberikan nama resmi untuk produk itu, kecuali nama kodenya: Tube.

Mengusung layar 3,5 inci, Nokia Tube menggunakan sistem operasi Symbian S60 dan beroperasi pada jaringan 3G serta dilengkapi dengan fasilitas GPS (global positioning system). Fitur Internet Tabletnya masih tetap dipertahankan.

iPhone 3G

Dari fitur tersebut terlihat jelas bahwa Nokia Tube sengaja diciptakan untuk menghabisi iPhone. Memang, dengan menyampingkan iPhone pun, Nokia Tube akan melenggang mulus.

Ini karena model bisnis kedua pabrikan itu berbeda. Apple menerapkan penjualan eksklusif iPhone hanya kepada operator AT&T. Sementara, Nokia menerapkan penjualan ritel menembus batas negara dan operator.

Sadar kepeloporannya bakal tenggelam, Apple secara diam-diam telah menyiapkan iPhone generasi baru, yaitu iPhone 3G.

Ken Dulaney, analis lembaga riset Gartner, yang membocorkan informasi itu saat diwawancarai situs berita iPod Observer. Menurutnya, Apple akan mendapatkan kontrak penjualan 10 juta unit iPhone 3G.

Ponsel berlayar 3,5 inci organic light emitting diode (OLED) itu akan dipasarkan Juni tahun ini berbarengan dengan rencana peluncuran iPhone berbasis sistem operasi OS 2.0. Jadi momentumnya pas satu tahun semenjak iPhone diluncurkan pengujung Juni tahun lalu.

Apakah yang dimaksud dengan iPhone OS 2.0 itu adalah iPhone 3G? Kita tunggu saja. Yang jelas, bakal terjadi perang seru antara Nokia Tube dan iPhone 3G. Sayangnya, pengguna ponsel di Tanah Air tidak dapat menikmati perang tersebut, karena iPhone tidak dijual secara resmi di Indonesia. (sutarno@[tautan dihapus])
