Android users expected to experience SkyFire soon
[tautan dihapus]

If Android weren't home to some premier web browsers already, one of the most popular ones to grace the Windows Mobile and BlackBerry platforms is about to make its appearance. SkyFire users have long enjoyed all wonders the proxy-based web browser has to offer – page loads are lightning quick and replicate the desktop experience intricately on a mobile handset. The Android version of the application is in the early stages and is now available in alpha form, but they're in the process of offering invitations for Android users who want to experience it. Even though there still might be some bugs or issues expected with the alpha release, the invitations are limited and not everyone will be able to get a at it – so you'd better hurry up and sign up.

Google Translator for Animals
[tautan dihapus]

We know that Google has been working on some sophisticated speech translation software, but why limit yourself to only humans? The geniuses over at Google in the UK have developed a new app that can translate to English from a myriad of animals, including cat, dog, bird, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, tortoise, horse, chicken, sheep, donkey, and pig. To develop Animal Translator, Google worked closely with many of the world's top language synthesis teams, and with leaders in the field of animal cognitive linguistics, including senior fellows at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Simply install the Animal Translator from the Android Market, select from the list which animal is to be used, and click on the mic icon. We were astonished at the high accuracy rate, as we tried it with an outside bird, which said "Who are you? Do you have food?" Give it a try on your Android phone, as it's free to use and is a lot of fun. By the way...April Fools!

Google Gesture

Search by Gesturing.
[tautan dihapus]

Do you find it hard to find a contact or locate an application from a list of hundreds of items on an Android phone? Or do you find it stressful to search for an item by typing in its title while on the go?

Gesture Search from Google Labs lets you search your Android-powered device by drawing alphabet gestures on the touch screen. It allows you to quickly find a contact, a bookmark, an application, or a music track from hundreds or thousands of items, all in one place. It is fast and fun to use.

Gesture Search currently recognizes the English alphabet and requires Android 1.6 or above.

Ini berguna untuk mencari phonebook.

Google Buzz gets integrated into Gmail for mobile on the iPhone & Android smartphones
[tautan dihapus]

Android and iPhone owners who heavily get their social networking fix with Google Buzz will now have access to the popular service via the Gmail mobile web app. The latest version of Gmail for mobile is now simply integrated with Buzz to make the experience of using either services a lot easier. Now there is a little Google Buzz icon in your Gmail inbox so you can quickly post a buzz, check out comments, or just compose and email to a friend all from the same interface. The new Gmail experience with Google Buzz is now active for iPhone and Android users – no word yet if other platforms will also see the integration. Naturally, there are still some improvements that can make the mobile experience complete – but let's hope that Google brings the experience equally to other platforms as well.

Android sees over 9,000 apps added in March to its market
[tautan dihapus]

There is this consistent trend we've been seeing with Android of late and there seems to be no end in sight in the amount of applications being developed for the platform. The most recent statistics from [tautan dihapus] saw yet another new pinnacle reached by the Android Market as March witnessed 9,331 new applications being added – which clearly displays an increasing trend for the amount of new apps made available each month. In December of last year alone, the Android Market saw 3,807 new apps while another 4,458 were seen in the following month of January. February saw 5,532 new arrivals and of course the figure posted for March shows the substantial amount of growth being seen with Android in terms of apps. Yet another pinnacle may be reached by the time April is over – the Android Market has the potential to see the amount reach 5 digits which easily will give some its competitors a run for their money. When comparing to the market leader, Apple's App Store, the developer ecosystem around the Android platform has seen an expansive growth in a relatively short amount of time. With 27,243 applications available in the Android Market, there is still a gap between the number that the App Store offers – but if these trends continue on their current path, there will eventually be a time when Android will clearly take the crown.

Android 2.2 is coming. What features do you want?

[tautan dihapus]

The majority of Android phones are still running an outdated firmware, but that hasn’t slowed Google from advancing their mobile operating system. Everyone knows the next version of Android (codenamed Froyo) is on the way and the rumors (1, 2) are beginning to pick up that the Nexus One will receive it soon.

Based on the data from our analytics reports it appears Google has already begun testing on their next firmware – Android 2.2. Google engineers have routinely given codenames to future builds of Android (Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, etc.), but they don’t receive a point release till they are finalized and nearing distribution.

Android 2.2 started showing up early this month.

We have shared this reporting data before and people are always quick to point out that it can be easily faked, but I have spoke with additional sources familiar with the matter who confirmed Android 2.2 is currently being tested.

The feature set for Android 2.2 was frozen long ago, but it remains mostly unknown. Google decided last year that they would no longer publish public roadmaps for future versions of Android. Based on the information we can gather, it appears Android 2.2 will mainly focus on performance enhancements.

Some of the rumored features for Android 2.2 include:

* JIT compiler
* Free additional RAM
* OpenGL ES 2.0 enhancements
* Flash 10.1 support
* Fixed problem with “crazy screen” / Resolution of cross multitouch
* Activation of Color Trackball
* Enable FM radio

Some of these features are plausible and others we have no clue.

The JIT compiler has already been confirmed by Google and we expect to find out new details during Google I/O. Android engineers will be leading a discussion that informs devs how to test and tune their apps to work with the new compiler.

Additional free RAM should come thanks to the new Linux kernel being used in Froyo. Google is moving from 2.6.29 to the newer 2.6.32 which makes it possible to address the extra RAM. This has already been done in custom ROMs like CyanogenMod so expect this feature for sure.

I’m no expert on OpenGL, but it has long been rumored that Froyo (or a future build) will add new APIs to the Android NDK which will let Java devs have full access to the OpenGL ES 2.0 library.

Flash 10.1 is coming in the first half of the year. It is entirely possible it could be tied to a future Android firmware and be included with an OTA update.

We have already addressed the HTC touch sensor issues. It sounds like a future software update could be used to clean this up a little.

Multicolor trackball notifications are definitely coming. Android hackers like ChainsDD have already unlocked this feature for users of custom ROMs. Google advertised the multicolor trackball during its launch of the Nexus One, but the feature was cut from the final Android 2.1 build.

When it comes to the FM radio, I have no idea. Other HTC phones on a similar Snapdragon platform (Desire and Incredible) include the FM radio so it’s not out of the question that the N1 has it too.

I spoke with Google’s Eric Tseng during CES and he told me there were many secrets left in the Nexus One that we would discover later.
When is it Android 2.2 coming out?

Circle May 19th on your calendar. This is the opening day of Google I/O and I’m anticipating the release of Android 2.2 (and maybe the Flash 10.1 beta) will be tied to this event. Google has provided every developer attending the event a free Droid or Nexus One, so it is possible to see a simultaneous release on both devices.

I’m really curious how first generation devices are going to play with this release. We are expecting most phones to receive Android 2.1 this month, so it will be interesting to see how Froyo fits in. Some of the Android engineers have been talking about Froyo on the Google boards and it is unclear if the HTC Dream and Magic will be able to support it since they only have 192 MB of RAM.
What features do you want in the next version of Android?

What is the biggest issue that you think Google needs to address in the next release of Android? Are you satisfied with the rumored list of changes? Is there some glaring feature that you think Google is overlooking? Share your hopes and predictions in the comments and let us know what you think.

Android market total app count passes the 50K milestone
25 April, 2010

The rapid growth of the Android market continues to impress the mobile world. The Google OS application distribution service now offers more than 50 000 titles to Android users around the world. And the best part is that more than half of them are free.

The Android market got nearly 9000 new apps in March alone and chances are there will be even more new offerings this month. The total app count currently stands at 50 395, which is really impressive for an OS that has been around for a year and a half.

The Android market is still nowhere near the standard of the Apple App Store (200 000 or so apps) but if the exponential growth continues things might get closer between those two. And seeing how well the Android devices are selling we suspect this moment can’t be too far away either.

The really good news is that despite the rapidly increasing total numbers, the large percentage of free apps in the Android market is kept intact. Nearly 60 percent of all apps in the Android market are free, compared to about 25 percent in the app distribution services of the competing platforms.

Android app installation onto memory card “coming soon”

One of the big benefits of rooting your Android handset is the ability to use something like Apps2SD to install applications onto your memory card instead of the handsets built-in storage. However, it appears that Google may be planning official support for this function. The Google Android Code page has seen the status of issue 1151, which deals with this feature, changed from ‘assigned’ to ‘future release’.

The engineer who made the change left the following note:

Apologies, but I’m not permitted to disclose scheduling information – suffice to say
it’s coming soon

Sorry for being vague, and thank you for your continued patience – I sincerely
appreciate it.

Happy friday

It’s unknown when we would expect this to appear, although Android 2.2 (Froyo) sounds like a sensible guess. If so, Froyo will be a packed release that also includes automatic application updates and Flash 10.1 support. Let’s just hope we get switched straight onto Android 2.2 rather than 2.1.

Kindle app for Android now available for free in the Android Market
If you have been interested in buying a Kindle e-book reader from Amazon, but didn't want to add another device to carry along with your Android phone, the good news today is that Amazon has released a version of Kindle for the Android Market. Even better news is that the download is free. You must have an Android device running 1.6 or higher which just about covers most phones using Google's open source OS. The app will allow you to purchase, browse and search from a library of more than 600,000 books. Amazon's newspaper, magazine and blog library will not be made available to Android users. The Kindle app has already been available for the iPhone and certain BlackBerry devices and will remember the last page you viewed so when you boot up on any platform, it will start your session by opening the app to that page. While the software is free, most premium books will cost you about $10. To install the Kindle book reader for your Android phone, head over to the Android Market, or you can scan the QR code on the source link.

Android 3.0 aka Gingerbread gets detailed

[tautan dihapus]

It’s no secret that the next delicious chapter in Android will be made out of Gingerbread, but until today we didn’t have much of an idea about its ingredients. Thanks to Russian mobile guru Eldar Murtazin, we believe we now know. First and foremost, it’s important to note that Android 3.0 is designed exclusively for high-end devices. For the foreseeable future, everything else will advance no further than 2.1 or 2.2. As much as that might rub people the wrong way, there’s a very good reason behind it: 3.0 has a strict set of hardware requirement that must be met. Specifically we’re looking at a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, and a minimum display size of 3.5″ (presumably WVGA). If a manufacturer wants to build a Shaq-sized phone with display in excess of 4″, resolutions of up to 1280×760 will be supported. Curious to know what 3.0 will look like? Thanks to Google’s actually paying attention to updating the UI, 3.0 will expand upon the UI seen in the Photo Gallery on the Nexus One. That is definitely a redesign we don’t take issue with. Excited? Well you should be, but apparently you’re going to have to sit tight a while as Android 3.0 Gingerbread is said to be headed towards an announcement on or around the [15th orb] 16th of October, with the first handsets going on sale in time for Christmas.
