Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 review: A new experience

1. Introduction

There's a lot to fall for in Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. Possibly the hottest looker of a PocketPC is also heavy on skill. Heavy enough to not just scratch out a living as a one-hit-wonder but aim for the WinMo top.

The extra solid metal looks, gorgeous screen and the right pinch of novelty called XPERIA panels look to us as good enough reasons for the X1 to be hyped and romanticized. By the way, romance or not, Sony Ericsson and HTC have hit their perfect shape with that one.

The XPERIA X1 is surely the most eagerly anticipated device in the world of Windows Mobile. Getting our review out was surely quite a wait too, we know. Better late than ever, as some folks say. We'll still have our say 'cause for the XPERIA it's a load of high expectations to live up to.

Main disadvantages:
* Body is a bit on the bulky side
* User interface is hardly thumb-optimized
* Mediocre camera performance
* No built-in accelerometer
* Poor display sunlight legibility
* Records low quality VGA@30fps video in 3GP format
* No TV-out port
* No full Flash support for the browser (hence no full-featured YouTube)

The XPERIA X1 is one of the best-equipped Windows Mobile devices to ever set foot on the market. But hey, is it not the most elaborate and charismatic PocketPC too? As to skills, the high-res 3" screen and the full QWERTY keyboard seem the most important parts of its magnificent ammo though its processing power is not to be neglected either.

Many devices find their identity in standing up to a rival. The XPERIA though is fatefully bound to always have one foot on alien ground. The haunting name for the X1 is HTC - manufacturer and main competitor.

As you probably guessed by yourselves the main alternative to the XPERIA X1 is HTC Touch Pro. It has a smaller screen than the XPERIA X1 and features a slightly lower resolution. In addition it is heavier and, if we were to be asked, not nearly as hot as the XPERIA.

However, the QWERTY keyboard of the Touch Pro is well ahead of what the X1 has to offer. The Touch Pro accelerometer and active magnetic stylus are small but nice touches that add to its allure. There are other advantages too, but we'll try to list them in the dedicated chapter of this review.

Furthermore, the Touch Pro had a nice two-month advantage since it hit the shelves back in August and this could be quite decisive for the sales. After all two months is quite a long time in the world of mobile phones, isn't it?

Let's not waste any more time now and get rolling with the actual review of Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. Unboxing is this little jump ahead.

Final words

Looking back at Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 we think there's one major question to answer. Now, no need to get defensive - the X1 sure is impressive. It goes even further to outperform its main rival - the HTC Touch Pro - in a number of areas and even offers slightly larger display and higher resolution.

However since the QWERTY keyboard is one of the key selling point and the Touch Pro has such great advantage there the choice between the two is really hard. And with the two month advantage that the HTC had we are quite confident that most users have already sealed a deal.

Still the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is a really good device, the purchase of which you are unlikely to regret. It is unable to solve all the usability issues of the underlying Windows OS but if modding and tweaking is your thing, you can achieve quite good results.

And the thumb-optimized X-Panels are quite a treat adding the essential fun element to the XPERIA user experience. We wouldn't by any means strongly recommend the X1 to non-Windows fans but they might still check it out - steps in the right direction are being taken.

Di review gsmarena videonya VGA 30fps tapi 3gp ya? Gw pikir at least mp4 lah.. Tadi liat hasil videonya jadi kurang bagus ya.. Sayang..

Pertama2nya SE kasih video res VGA malah ga maksimal..

???? Emangnya kenapa dengan 3gp ?? itu kan semua tergantung codecnya, di hp gw video convertan malah pake 3gp semua, ngga pake mp4 lagi, walau extensi di rename ke mp4 tetap jalan sih. Ga ada masalah lah dengan mp4 dan 3gp, yang penting itu Codecnya.

Yup, memang format rekaman videonya 3gp.
Tapi bukan format 3gp ini yang jadi masalah bro.
Seperti Johny_Lim bilang di atas, itu kan hanya masalah coding aja.

Tapi memang videonya X1 itu agak kurang stabil. Frame rate-nya kadang2 bisa turun jadi di bawah 30 fps, tergantung kondisi lingkungan saat video diambil.

Sampai sekarang aja gw masih bingung kapan atau bagaimana kondisi yang tepat untuk menghasilkan 30 fps.

Sering juga sih dapet 30 fps di outdoor, tapi pernah juga outdoor kurang dari 30 fps. Kalo indoor seringnya memang di bawah 30 fps.

Tapi tentang kamera, seperti gw bilang di atas, gw gak setuju sama gsmarena. Kalo pengen bukti cek ke thread Kumpulan Hasil Photo juga deh.

akhirnya tanggal 23 desember kemaren gua beli xperia, kesan pertama pas unboxing, keren abis, selama ini gua liat cuma dummny, yang materialnya agak terkesan kaya murahan (yang hitam), tapi ternyata aslinya mantep, juga ga mengundang cap jari seperti yang gua kira. overall baru maen-maen sebentar, karena kemaren baru malem natal, jadi ga sempet, hehehe..komen gua, secara fisiknya, bagus banget, keliatan kesan elegan & mewah-nya banget, semua perfect. tapi kalo gua perhatiin, untuk masuk mode panel, agak nge-lag ya..camera top, blm coba yang laen2 lagi..

setau gua memory x1 itu 256mb, kenapa pas dicek tulisannya 384mb ya ? gua kayanya pernah baca di somewhere si..kalo 128 lg knp gt, ga gitu perhatiin karena waktu itu belom beli,gua lupa..mohon pencerahannya, thanks

Pas instal spb diry, jalan seperti biasa.
cuman pas kita buka sms disononya ( alis di spn diary nyah ), dan umpamanya kita tidak bales.
Kita close messagenya, kok bar diatas bisa hilang yah?

Model panel, sebenarnya lag bisa dihilang kan sih.
Caranya gini, pas mau ganti panel, pas tekan button X panel, maka back light akan keluar, nah tekan sekali lagi, maka lag pun tidak akan ditemukan, pengecualian dia panel SE 1 dan 2

Memori Xperia memang 384, 128nya kalau gak salah buat grafis.

Cara ngeliat cpu grafis gimana ya?
karena pas ngeliat di device information>hardware, RAM cuma 256

di tabs Diary nya lu ud nambahan 'Messaging' blm?
Defaultnya baru ada 'Calendar', 'Tasks', 'Contacts', dan 'Notes'.

Gw punya juga kemaren abis masa trial nya, jadi gw cek lagi di forum part 6 and ketemu SN nya yg dari bro chen. Ini serial number nya 2G6X V8J6 WU2Y itu semua disambung aja. Skrg pocket plus gw udah normal kembali... btw ini pocketplus yg 4.02 versi nya...

kalo loe pake inesoftphone n kebetulan masih trial juga, registration number nya asal aja masukin. Gw masukin angka 1 semua, trus udah beres...
