Sanjay Jha has said that Win Mob will definitely form a big part of his plans.
WinMob has been strictly enterprise/productivity under the previous regime; let's see if sanjay takes that platform more consumery - especially with WinMob 7 coming up and other commercial developments in that ecosystem about to take place.

Motorola's new co-CEO tells Sun-Times his plans
August 4, 2008
BY SANDRA GUY Staff Reporter

Motorola’s new co-chief executive and head of its mobile phone unit, Sanjay Jha, said today that he will make important decisions on the Schaumburg-based cell-phone giant’s chip-set and technology platforms in the next 90 days and aim to quickly launch competitive products.

Motorola announced earlier this morning that it had hired Jha, a veteran of the wireless industry and former Qualcomm chief operating officer, to lead its storied but now-lagging mobile-phone business, which is expected to be prepared to split off as a separate public company between July 1 and Sept. 30, 2009.

Motorola CEO Greg Brown is now sharing the CEO title and leading Motorola’s other two divisions, which include cableTV set-top boxes, cable modems, technology for cell-phone carriers, and two-way radios sold to firefighters, police officers and other emergency responders.

Brown and most analysts applauded Jha’s hire, calling it a “big win” for Motorola and an “exciting next chapter” in the company’s history. Motorola’s stock jumped 9.3 percent in mid-day trading, to $9.63.

Jha, 45, who served as president of the Qualcomm division that made chips for cell phones and worked at Qualcomm since 1994, said he has strong opinions about the kind of chipset and software platforms Motorola should take advantage of, but he first wants to meet Motorola’s handset team and get details of their work.

“I’d be looking to get to know the team, understand their perspective, what we’re doing well, what we need to do better,” he said in an interview with the Sun-Times. “I need to understand our product road map. Are we executing on it? Are we going to augment it? I’m going to look at chipset and software strategy, how we’ll lead and innovate in the marketplace and our geographical distribution.”

Jha will also meet with Motorola’s customers and supply partners throughout the world.

Jha said he will make strategic hires in areas where he needs help, such as marketing and expanding into new geographical markets.

He declined to comment specifically whether Motorola will experience further layoffs, but said he believes Motorola has “a wonderful team” running its handset business. Motorola, which employs 15,000 in Illinois, has cut 10,000 jobs since last year.

Motorola has come under fire for its lack of innovation and for over-relying on its Razr model, which reached its height of popularity in 2004 and 2005, until the Razr became a commodity. As a result, Motorola has suffered declines in market share for cell phones, and ranks behind rivals Nokia and Samsung. Motorola has lost half its market share in the past two years. Just last week, Motorola reported wider losses at its cellphone business in the second quarter even though it surprised experts by keeping its market share steady.

Jha, who noted that he has had excellent relationships with telephone carriers worldwide throughout his career, gave Motorola more credit than its critics, saying he has long thought of Motorola as having a talented research and technological team, and as being a “wonderful company with an incredible track record.”

Analyst Mark McKechnie of American Technology Research called Jha’s hiring “a huge surprise” that bodes well for Motorola.

“Motorola is getting a leader with great technical background, industry experience and business savvy,” said McKechnie. “Naysayers will say Jha has limited consumer branding experience, but we believe Jha’s industry knowledge will more than offset that.”

Jha’s hiring is expected to keep Motorola on track to spin off the handset division, a move called for by activist investor Carl Icahn.

Motorola has experienced upheaval since Icahn, a billionaire who demanded quick and big changes at the company, started agitating for change. Motorola gave in to Icahn in May when it granted representation on its board of directors to two Icahn representatives.

Since former chief executive Ed Zander resigned under pressure in December 2007, Motorola has lost or replaced the heads of numerous businesses including finance, technology, strategy and marketing.

Jha will receive 3.7 million restricted shares of Motorola stock, worth $35 million, as well as options to buy 16.6 million shares. If the handset spin off is completed, Jha will receive more stocks and options that will give him a 3 percent stake in the new company. If the spinoff fails to occur before Oct. 31, 2010, Jha will receive $30 million in cash.

Jha, who has three sons ages 10-and-a-half, 7 and 5-and-a-half, said his children are in school in San Diego, where the family lives, but that he will spend a substantial amount of his time in Schaumburg and that the time he spends here will gradually increase.

Brown and Jha said no decision has yet been made on which part of the company will retain the Motorola name after the handset division is spun off, or whether the two stand-alone companies will somehow share the name or a derivative of it.

Dear Motorola Freak,

Thanks"

Apa pendapat kalian?
