Motorola terbelah dua

JAKARTA: Motorola hari Rabu lalu mengumumkan rencana untuk memisahkan bisnis telepon seluler dari operasi mereka yang lain.

Para eksekutif Motorola mengatakan langkah ini akan memungkinkan kedua perusahaan dapat memusatkan perhatian pada kekuatan dan kelemahan masing-masing dan mempercepat rencana pemulihan unit telepon seluler mereka.

“Pembentukan dua perusahaan publik terpisah memberikan fokus manajemen yang lebih baik, dan struktur modal yang lebih sesuai untuk kebutuhan bisnis masing-masing,” ucap Greg Brown, CEO Motorola yang nantinya akan memimpin unit nonponsel perusahaan tersebut, seperti dikutip AP.

Dia menilai langkah itu akan meningkatkan kelincahan dan organisasi. “Ini juga akan membantu kami melangkah maju.”

Perincian rencana tersebut belum tersedia, namun Motorola menyebutkan bisnis handset mereka akan beroperasi terpisah dari perusahaan pecahan mereka yang menawarkan set-top box,modem, dan peralatan komputasi dan komunikasi.

Apabila rencana tersebut disetujui oleh regulator, kedua unit tersebut akan dipisahkan pada 2009.

Tidak disebutkan apakah salah satu perusahaan atau keduanya akan mempertahankan merek Motorola, atau perusahaan mana yang akan mendistribusikan saham pada pemilik modal saat ini.

Carl Icahn, salah satu investor Motorola, menyebutkan pengumuman tersebut sudah lama tertunda dan sudah terlambat, serta terus mendorong pemilihan empat orang anggota dewan yang mewakilinya.

“Sebagai salah satu pemegang saham Motorola terbesar, saya masih prihatin tentang kesigapan dan cara pelaksanaan transaksi pemisahan dan pemilihan tim manajemen baru untuk bisnis peranti bergerak,” katanya.

Motorola saat ini terus mencari CEO baru untuk bisnis peranti bergerak mereka sambil berusaha kembali ke posisi nomor 2 dalam pasar telepon seluler. Motorola kehilangan tempat tersebut tahun lalu pada saingannya, Samsung Electronics. Perusahaan Finlandia, Nokia Corp. tetap memegang posisi pertama. (k8)

Di sini lah hebatnya. Dimana-mana merk-merk lain jadi satu; seperti Sony (udah mau bangkrut) dengan Ericsson (udah mau bangkrut) menjadi Sony Ericsson (Q1,2008 sudah mulai menurun keuntungannya), Nokia dengan Siemens menjadi Nokia Siemens.

Motorola to Offload Half its Birmingham Staff

Motorola is poised to axe half the staff at its design facility in Birmingham, as the mobile company tries to turn around its beleaguered mobile devices division.

All the 121 staff at the facility were told Tuesday they are "at risk of redundancy". Motorola is proposing to make half of them redundant and said it may close the site.

Motorola's loss-making mobile devices division has been in turmoil recently and its revenues have been tumbling. Two executives from the division, including the head of mobile devices for EMEA, departed over the weekend, following the exit of the company's head of mobile last week.

The division's fourth quarter sales - its latest results - were down 38 per cent compared with a year earlier.

In a statement released today, Motorola said: "Since the beginning of 2007 Motorola has been public about its commitment to returning the company's Mobile Devices business to its market-leading position by improving profitability, driving product portfolio enhancements and rationalising costs.

"As a result it is proposed that the Birmingham site will need to reduce headcount by approximately 50 per cent which may potentially require the closure of the site.

"Therefore, all employees will initially be placed at 'risk of redundancy' whilst alternative opportunities including redeployment, relocation, flexible working/home working or the opportunity of a 'service site' arrangement are investigated as part of the consultation process."

The company said it would consult employees on the proposed redundancies over the next 90 days. The cuts would likely follow soon after.

The Birmingham facility is a Design Centre, so most of the job losses will be among technical staff.

A company spokesperson said cagily that Motorola would not be invoking job losses at the company's other UK sites.

Facilities in Basingstoke, Cambridge and Livingston are also part of the mobile devices division. The spokesperson said: "The announcement made today is related to Birmingham."

When pressed on whether it would affect the other sites, she said: "So far the answer would be no."

Motorola has this year already laid off 155 people at Cambridgeshire-based TTPCom, a business which it acquired two years ago. ®

The MOTO Z10 is merely an upgrade to the MOTO Z8 with no substantial differences in design or functionality.

The launch of the Z10 was pretty much predefined, and what’s more, they originally planned to release late in 2007 (in October or November). As is usually the case with Motorola they couldn’t meet the deadline, so the Z10’s launch slipped into Q2 2008. Motorola is trying to position its new product as an imagining-centric solution, however, in my opinion, that’s not the best idea, now that the Nokia N82 and Sony Ericsson C902 and others are in the forefront of the market. It turns out that Motorola is touting a 3.2 MP device whereas the mass-market is already enjoying 5 MP cameraphones with even better specs.

The amount of RAM is extremely small and is pretty much in line with what we saw from the previous generation of devices, for example the Sony Ericsson M600i (32 Mb). One possible explanation is that the Z10 is an all-MRAM fare, but then the handset would be more expensive, and there would be no benefit to such a small amount of RAM. Thus, it is clear that they have probably used standard NAND-memory.

Due to its unique memory architecture and the tiny volume of RAM onboard, all the handset’s strengths have been negated, as the tests rate its performance on the same level as some low-end solutions. In terms of the interface, the Z10 seems quite speedy, being on par with other products, but if there are a lot of applications running, especially if these are third-party programs, the Z10 becomes somewhat sluggish. By and large the model is nothing special as far as the current generation of handsets goes, but it already lags behind Nokia’s products. On the other hand, a handful of functions sport an instant start-up feature, for example, our favourite throughout this review so far has been the music player, which is what the Z10’s main attraction is.

The bundled 3.2 Mpix autofocus-enabled camera shows off CMOS-sensor and LED flash. Quality-wise it is pretty mediocre, and there are no pleasant surprises to look for.

For video shooting, the Z10 offers two quality settings – best and good, three resolutions to choose from (SQCIF, QCIF, QVGA), 30 FPS, and absolutely no limits on clip length. But the truth is, its video is quite average as far as quality goes.

The phone’s sales kick off early in April at 500-550 USD, which is way too steep for the Z10. We wonder what the maker charges so much for? Form-factor? It would be very unreasonable of Motorola to do that – they need to take this new design to the mainstream with bargain prices otherwise it will never garner any following. Probably, these are extra applications for editing photo/video and beaming multimedia content straight to online blogs that add such a hefty premium? But the value of these feats is somewhat questionable. Or is it the upgraded camera module? I wonder. The thing is, the Z10 comes into the market already somewhat dated due to its exorbitant price – what looks appropriate for a 300-350 USD worth device, seems like a very bad deal in a handset that retails for twice as much. Even the Nokia N82 leaves the Z10 far behind on all fronts with its camera, GPS and a slew of free software available on the web. That’s why we feel bewildered about the Motorola Z10’s price tag. Unfortunately, with this pricing policy, it aims at a very narrow niche, specifically brand loyal consumers who want to support Motorola in this time of trouble.
