We got some quality time with the HTC Touch Pro and left with a few thoughts about this upcoming PDA-phone from the Taiwan-based manufacturer.

Just looking at the front of the device, it's almost exactly the same as a Touch Diamond. Because we have gotten so used to how thin the Diamond is, it comes as quite a shock how thick the Touch Pro is. But if you put it beside the TyTN II, HTC's last model with a slideout keyboard, you realize the Touch Pro is just a hair thinner than that device. The fact that it has a slideout keyboard makes the increased depth inevitable--that much we can say.

Aside from features like a VGA display and other improved tech specs, another obvious change from the TyTN II is that the Touch Pro slides out to the right to expose the keyboard. When the TyTN II was launched, we asked HTC why it made that PDA-phone slide out to a different direction from the Dopod 838 Pro (the model it replaced). The reply was that feedback from customers indicated this was better. This reversion to sliding right feels very strange when taking that comment into perspective. And in case you are wondering, no, the Touch Pro's screen doesn't tilt up slightly like the TyTN II's.

The layout of the five-row keyboard on the Touch Pro is excellent. If you are reading this from a desktop computer or notebook, take a look at your keyboard--it probably has five rows for the main QWERTY section with the number keys on the top. This layout is almost exactly reproduced on the Touch Pro, so you don't have to think much about where each key is if you work on a real keyboard regularly. As for the actual physical keys themselves, whether you'll like them is up to personal preference. These are smaller than those found on the TyTN II and could feel a little cramped for those with large fingers. Nonetheless, we do feel it's something most can get used to.

The software on the test set was far from final, but already we felt how snappy TouchFLO 3D was on the Touch Pro. It was significantly more responsive than on the Touch Diamond and that's probably in no small part thanks to the whopping 288MB RAM. Of course, things may change when the Touch Pro becomes available, but the likelihood of it becoming less responsive than what we have seen is very low. One other feature we noticed on the Touch Pro was a special shortcut screen with eight large icons that appear when you slide the keyboard out. This makes it easier to get to commonly used items quickly though at this point we do not know if the shortcuts can be customized.

The shortcut icons that appear automatically when you slide out the keyboard.

Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take photos of the test unit. Ergonomics-wise, our sources have indicated that the final fit and finish are not confirmed, though the one that we had up close had a matte, soft-touch back cover--a definite improvement over the smudge-prone glossy one found on the Touch Diamond. We have no idea what HTC will decide on for the final unit, but we're crossing our fingers the company will ditch the glossy cover in favor of the one we saw.

Without a doubt, this model is shaping up nicely. Because of its metallic finish, we have to admit that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 may still be the device of choice for those who place a strong emphasis on looks. But based on the usability features and sensible keyboard layout, we're pretty certain the Touch Pro won't be left in the dust in a race between the two. Look out for more on this handheld as we draw closer to its September launc
